NFCU - New Card or CLI First

Hi All! My Mother is due a CLI on her NFCU Cash Rewards card soon. When I was preparing to apply for my 2nd NFCU card, someone on MyFico mentioned it was best to apply for the new card first and then ask for the CLI. Is this still the case? If so, can someone remind me of the reason why you should do this?

I'm considering the best sequence for her since she'll be getting other cards as well at the same time. Ideally I'd like her new higher limit to show before applying for the new ones, but I also don't want to leave funds on the table for a new NFCU card as well.

Also, based on your experience, which next NFCU card would you get and why? I know what is best for each person will vary, but I'm interested in hearing your experiences and feedback.

Your feedback is appreciated.

Thank you!

Typically, and based on the general DPs on the first page of the NFCU mega thread, it's usually recommended to apply for the 2nd card first, then the CLI on the existing card.

Without knowing much about your mother's credit goals, spending habits or how she currently uses her Cash Rewards card, it's a bit trivial to provide any recommendations given other cards that NFCU currently offers. If you can provide more information on what your mother is looking for that she may not be getting with the Cash Rewards card, then that will make it a lot easier for the community to provide DPs on other NFCU CCs.

@FinStar Thank you for the link to that thread. Regarding my Mother's credit profile, I'm assisting her with getting more credit lines to have different options and higher limits. She doesn't need it at the moment, but will have repairs to do at her home soon and will be doing more traveling so I want to help her line everything up in advance. Ideally I'm looking into a higher cash back card for her general spending and one for groceries and gas. The higher limits on the personal side are also to help when applying for business credit cards, etc.

Re: NFCU - New Card or CLI First

You could have her go for the MoreRewards. And it's new card first because you want to the highest possible SL on a new card, just in case there's nothing left for them to give out as a CLI on an existing card.

No one is "due a CLI"

When I was preparing to apply for my 2nd NFCU card, someone on MyFico mentioned it was best to apply for the new card first and then ask for the CLI. Is this still the case? If so, can someone remind me of the reason why you should do this?

Usually NFCU is more generous with CLI's on one's second card than on one's first card.

I'm considering the best sequence for her since she'll be getting other cards as well at the same time.

That sounds like a spree. Not necessarily a great idea.

Ideally I'd like her new higher limit to show before applying for the new ones, but I also don't want to leave funds on the table for a new NFCU card as well.

It sounds to me like you're doing too much too fast.  Are you sure your mother is on board with all this new complexity in her life?

@OmarGB9 Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate it. I'll definitely look into the MoreRewards Card.

My favorite card is the Flagship Card.  It was the second card that I applied for and received and is also the biggest credit line that I received from Navy Federal so far.  The cash back rewards on this card are decent at around 2% as well.  My current limit on this card is $23,300.  It's an odd limit for sure but I'm happy with it.

Eventually, after I garden for as long as I can, I plan to try for the Platinum card just for the really low interest rate it offers and will use it for any balance transfers or if I plan to carry a balance sometime (the lowest is 5.9% depending on the fed interest rate increases, but I'm sure it will stay very competitive).

If you check out the main data points thread by Navy Federal, you will learn all kinds of interesting things for sure.  Navy Federal will be good to you as long as you are good to them.  Best of luck!
