Navy FCU application and Visa

My nephew is currently in basic training in the Air Force.  He will be home Saturday and we will be paying the family a visit.  Seeing that I want to be a member of Navy FCU, do I have to sign him up for an account first and then become a member from his account or can just his information be used to sign myself up for an account?  Does Navy offer pre-approvals for Visas when you become a member?  My mother, father and brother are all former military enlistees but I figured I'd take this up with my nephew.  Would love to teach him about how to build a credit history because I know his dad never did (I have better credit than any of my family members).  If he chooses not to have an account then I'd like to have one for myself.

To be on the safe side, have him open up an account and then you do so using his membership/relationship. Tell him it'll be worth it. As far as preapprovals for CCs, auto loans, etc., you will notice them when you log on to your account or you can ask the CSR about any offers when you call in (or go into a branch) for membership. That's what I know from my own experience. CreditAddict is the expert on these things really.

Congratulations on your nephew's enlistment in the Air Force! My daughter just graduated from Army basic combat training and will be home this Saturday as well Smiley Happy

Keep both your credit and your body in top shape!

Re: Navy FCU application and Visa

Thank you for the info.  My mother misunderstood me.  I applied for several Comenity cards, attached to major credit cards, and got approved.  So she got all competitive and took an offer from something she got in her snail mailbox.  Her credit score dropped and she kinda blamed me.  That's why I choose to ask my nephew.  Nobody in my family knows about the credit game that this forum has taught me.  I want a 10k approval so I can toss a J. Crew and an HSN card in the sock drawer.

Ok this is how it works. Family members are eligible ie parents, grandparent, sibling, children. So in order for you to be eligible thru your nephew, whichever of his parents is your sibling, they join first. Then you are eligible.

Re: Navy FCU application and Visa

Honestly I'm not sure if nephews qualify you even if he joins. From my understanding it's spouses, grand parents, parents, siblings, and that includes half, step and adopted, also roommates but he has to be living with you and has to be responsible for some of the bills. I would call and ask just to be on the safe side.....if you are unable to join because he is your nephew that is not living with you or you just want to be extra cautious then what u want to do is have your nephew join then he can get his father or mother to join then you could join as their sibling. Or if your mother, father or brother is active military or retired military you can also join through them. They don't have to join at all for you to join you just have to make sure you have their paperwork proving they are active or retired military just in case NFCU ask for it.

I know that's a lot to go through but I just wanted to point that out just in case because NFCU might ask for proof of eligibility and if your nephew doesn't qualify you they will shut you down without thinking twice. So you just want to make sure you have your ducks in a row.

As for the pre-approvals, yes they do offer them. I got one for a CC and auto loan the first day I logged in after joining but then it went away (which is normal for NFCU) I was scared to apply after it went away but everyone kept telling me that was normal so I applied and it was the best decision of my life. I just recently got the auto preapproval again for the 2nd time and it took about a month for it to come back. but like the PP said you can always call or go to branch and they can tell you all of your offers.

Re: Navy FCU application and Visa

This information is disappointing.  I tried to sign my mother up for NASA and it rejected her due to Chexsystem.  Have never known her to write a bad check and her credit score is high.  My brother is not financially responsible.  I doubt he'd qualify for NFCU.  So last night I signed up for PSECU.  For some reason, these credit unions ask questions where I answer "none of the above".  That always keeps the application from being instantly approved.  I have no doubt I will get in.  Already member of DCU, Alliant, SDFCU, and NASA.  Still waiting on that first 10k pre-approval.

Re: Navy FCU application and Visa

Checksystems doesnt mean you are a bad check writer

sometimes its just the monthly service fee... if there is nothing in the account...the account will be charged overdraf and eventuallty close out and reported to chex
