Has anyone applied for the NFCU Secured Rewards card, and then tried to apply for an unsecured 6mo later?

I've been with NFCU for 3yrs now, and only have the Secured card to build a relationship with them. Never tried applying for their unsecured cards. I've had the secured card since March 2017, it posted to my credit reports April 4th, and my first statement is due May 1st. I called customer service to see what their graduation policy was, and was told that it could happen before the year mark as the goal is to get away from the secured card as fast as possible.

I was thinking of applying for an unsecured card in September of this year. Current scores are in the 580-590 range.

I joined NFCU in Jan 2017 and applied for the CashRewards card (Denied).  I ended up with the Secured card.  My score was right where you are now.  Not sure what posssesed me, but I applied for the CashRewards in March and was approved for $9300 and CLOC for $15k.  So, its kind of silly that I have a secured card with them now.  I am REALLY hoping it secures next month (I've heard that they can graduate at 5 months now)  My score has climbed significantly in that time, I am at 670-680s now.  I had a few baddies drop off, including a public record on my EQ report.    So I may not be the best example, but, it is POSSIBLE to get unsecured cards/loans even though one has a secured card as well, haha.

Ok credit, getting better.....slowly.... Can't seem to stay in the Garden for any extended period of time. I'm trying. Mid to upper 600's across the board.

Sounds like you're doing great!  I'd recommend holding steady on that secured card...whenever it does graduate, whether that's 1, 3, 6, or more months down the line, you'll be in a great spot already having your second card open...A fair number of folks have difficulty these days getting a second card, so you'll be ahead of the game!  Smiley Happy

Re: Navy Federal Thread for CLI and Additional Cards

I'm in the process of trying to get membership into NFCU.  I've sent in the docs and am just waiting to hear back from them.  My question is - I understand they pull TU for CC apps.  Unfortunately TU is my lowest of the three b/c of a bogus collections that I can't seem to get removed.  That collections is not reporting on the other two.  If I freeze TU, will they automatically deny me or will they move to EQ instead to see if I can be approved?

If it turns out they will just go to EQ for approval (my highest score), how do I go about freezing my TU?

I would recommend against freezing TU, because they also pull TU for ID verification in the membership process, and if it's frozen at THAT point, you risk being referred for a BSA verification *shudder*...you don't want that

Just a friendly PSA that's it's taboo here to discuss freezing a credit file with the intent of forcing a creditor to pull another bureau.  Smiley Wink

@Anonymous, you might consider heading over to General Credit Topics and starting a thread there detailing your issue with TU.  Many really knowledgeable people hang out there and they might be able to offer suggestions on how to get your issue cleared up.

I had the same exact situation, a $500 secured card (couldn't get approved for unsecured) a few months later an unsecured card at 10k and a CLOC at 15k.  They made me wait the full 13 months to unsecure then increased that limit to 2k, waiting for the AR for a CLI, hope it is in the neighborhood of my other unsecured card which is now at 18k.

Re: Navy Federal Thread for CLI and Additional Cards

I look at people who freezes reports as someone who has something to hide most of the time. If your reports are in such bad shape one shouldn't even attempt to apply.

I'm also noticing the more people joining NFCU the less dicipline with attempting for the highest possible CL they can get with them. If your new and just joined give it 6 months after your first CC attempt and show some actual use and payments so they can have some idea of your habits, you can read half this thread and the one common thing most people who just joined have getting 5-10 HP within the 1st year for trying so **bleep** hard for the high CL, 2nd/3rd CC (which the 3rd is by far the hardest to get approved for) and LOC's, it looks pretty desperate to be honest. Oh and the people itchy for the AR's even though thats less than 50% chance you get one after just 3 months. The worse thing is reading I put an x amount of spend this month and paid it back. That's nice to know now do that for 6 months straight so they can give you a real increase based on 6 months not 1 month and not see use after. Sounds like nit picking but this is ALOT of people in here in alot of different threads its like a common plague.

I must admit watching the influx of people joining NFCU has been entertaining, but the people who have been here awhile supposed to be giving good info and guiding people ain't really caring to much for the new ones joining I see, half of the people are over trying and going to shut themselves out of any future NFCU stuff if they keep piling on HP with them.

I think its look bad if your joining NFCU asking for high limits and don't even bank with them, I actually bank with them and have more exposure with them than anyone else due to making them my main CU/Bank of choice. If your not looking to make them your main bank then you shouldn't complain what they give you just be happy your in as a civilian period (the ones who don't have military family to get them in and never been in the military)

Last thing I want is NFCU to become a crappy CU because people think they deserve a specific CL and so on, can't stand people like that.

Re: Navy Federal Thread for CLI and Additional Cards

Where are you guys reconning decisions? I got approved for 24k for the CashRewards and denied for the CLOC. I sent an emessage and got this:

Unfortunately, we are unable to discuss the reasons for disapproval through an eMessage. A letter of explanation was mailed to your address of record.
Please take the time to review the letter. If you need any further assistance, please call our 24 hour, toll-free member service line at 1-888-842-6328. Follow the prompts for Consumer Lending and ask to speak with a Consumer Loans Specialist.

Anyone have any experience with it?

Wait for the letter sometimes it will say that your at max exposure with them. Only other way to get around it is to upload your paystubs and hope for a reversal if you dont want to wait for the letter. You have to send them a Secured Message to recon and upload paystubs.
