Re: Navy Federal Thread for CLI and Additional Cards

@Aim_High Aren't you about due for a Navy covid special? If so, maybe request 3.5k on your next go around to get rid of that $500

If it were me, I would wait until early June. I think they lowered the cap from $8k to $4k on June 1, 2020. (I note that you got one of the last $8k increases reported here. Nicely done!) To me it seems reasonable to guess that policy changes like this tend to take effect on the first day of a month, or maybe the first business day. So maybe they'll raise it back to $8k on June 1, 2021. I think it's better to wait 1-2 weeks for a chance at $8k, rather than getting $4k (or $3500) now and being iced out for the next six months. But then again, I thought the same thing about January 1, and February 1, and... so my Navy predictions are less than stellar. Smiley LOL

Naahhh ... I'm gonna ask for $3,319

(for new CL of $25,819)

just so I can REALLY screw with everyone's OCD.  Lol Smiley LOL

Yes, I'm almost due.  Last one was 12/09/2020 so 180 days will be 06/07/2021 per my date calculator.

But before I do that, I've been sitting on another app for Navy Card number two since they declined me for More Rewards card last year (07/06/2020) due to too many new accounts.   I've been contemplating a mini-spree for the past two months but just haven't pulled the trigger.  Just passed nine months gardening and reached Palladium Spade, of all things! Smiley Surprised   Go figure!  I've changed my plans about new apps and cards many times in the past few months but still have been a little indecisive about what to go for next.  I was hoping NFCU SUBs would be a lot sweeter in the spring but they are rather lame right now, so that is disappointing.

I know I need to apply for card two BEFORE I ask for CLI as I don't want to risk another silly denial, although I think I'm pretty safe right now with my nine months in the garden.

My question to the group is how often over the year could you be approved for a CLI. Example getting past the 93 days from the open and the 1st 180 days (6 months) mark is it something like every year thereafter?

Navy will consider ongoing CLI requests every six months after one is approved.  That's a pretty standard metric with many lenders.  Normally, if you ask for CLI and are denied, it does not "reset" the clock so you can ask sooner.  However, asking more often than about every 30 days is probably a waste of time and may signal desperation to the lender, which isn't a good thing.

With Navy and many other lenders, once a CLI is approved, you must wait at least six months to be approved for another one.

I'm confused. I've been seeing something about 91/3 for CLI and you are saying every 6 months. My NFCU card graduated to cash rewards with a 2k limit after my Feb statement. 91/3 would have been after my May statement, of which I gave it a few days but I just applied for a CLI. Did I just bite the bullet and went to soon?

Graduation increase counts as a CLI. Once you're granted a CLI, you cannot get another for 6 months. 91/3 is only referring to the 91 days and 3 statements after the account is opened. That's when the account first becomes eligible for a CLI. After any change in credit limit, there is a 6 month period before you can get a CLI.

I've understood that basically backwards this whole time.. I thought I had to wait 6 months for a new account (because I had when it was secured)and basically 3 months there after for CLI. So does that mean, I just need to wait an additional 3 months for my cash rewards or did I reset it by asking for a CLI today?

There's no reset when you ask early so just 3 more months. Count 183 days from your graduation increase and that's when you ask.

It is true that secured cards have a longer period than unsecured cards but 91/3 some improved profiles have been approved for a second card while the secured card was still secured so it does still apply on that front.
