Are you talking about a secured card with NFCU? Would I have to apply for that with a HP? How much should the limit be?
I had a similar experience when I open my account with them. App’d for a cc and was denied. Had a direct deposit set up and waited 2 months and app’d for the platinum cc and was approved.

The one thing I try to stress in my post of such is that one experience with credit can be drastically different from someone else whom we presume to have similar situations. There are a lot of things that factor into such. Credit profiles, like fingerprints, may seem the same on the surface but unique in their own regard.

I've helped my GF and just in the last couple of months my cousin. Both had scores in the high 500s low 600s with derogs. My cousin apped for a CC with Navy fed when he joined them 2 months ago. He was declined. I added him to my Navy Fed CC as an AU last month. Just as I did my GF last year. He applied again this week for a Amex through them and was approved for $15,000 with a 15.99% APR! He and I were both floored. I know for a fact his EX was a 585. The other scores were in that same ball park. Both he and the gf were approved for great SLs after having them as AUs on my Navy Federal credit card.
If you have a family member that has a CC with them in good standing. And wouldn't mind adding you as an AU, it will help a lot IME.
I was approved for a high limit on a NFCU Go Rewards card with a score of 580. I think there is more to it than a loop hole. I think NFCU likes low utilization more than they care about scores.

I was denied for a CC when I joined in Jan as well. They offered me a secured card at that time and I took it, no new HP. 5 months later it Graduated. Fast forward to today. Ive got the GoRewards (was my secured) $2000, CashRewards $19,500 and Platinum $15,000. Treat NFCU good and they will return the favor! I would def recommend looking at getting the secured card if they offer it.
