MY CAREER

I am a wardrobe stylist, personal shopper and image consultant. For years I used my own cash to purchase items for my clients. This payment method is always best because if I needed to return an item I didn't have to wait for the money to be credited back on my debit card. This is also the reason I never applied for any of the store cards I frequent. Personal shoppers can easily spend $500 - $2,500+ on a single clients, especially if they are getting a makeover. If I was using credit or store card and did a return I would have to wait until the charges reversed before I could shop again ( depending on the amount of cards I had and limits ) which is not great for business.

THE OCCURRENCE

I was a victim of identity thief via mugging. [ I wouldn't wish this experience on a identity thief ] My wallet was taking during the mugging... I canceled my debit cards, my credit cards and placed alerts on my credit. I thought my nightmare was over. Somehow my ID was used at my credit union(s) by someone who they said looked exactly like me (HOW DID THEY MANAGE THAT. SMH) and they withdrew all but $50 in all my accounts over the course of 3 days.

THE DELEMMA

Now here is what leads me to needing advice. My cash was gone leaving me with NOTHING but my two credit cards. I resulted to using both credit cards I had everyday. I assumed the credit unions would realize that I was not the person who took out my money and things would go back to normal. I was WRONG! Long story short I am still fighting for my money and the results of having no cash left me making late payments. ( Details below )

My family stepped in and got me back on my feet allowing me to work and make some money again.

ADVICE NEEDED:

I now need to apply for some credit cards so I can have room to make several purchases. Which cards should I apply for based on my credit rating and recent late payments?

 SIDE NOTE

* I paid credit card balance down to $346 to help my utilzation to just waiting on the update. Statement closes on the 17th.

* I recently opted in to get pre approvals so im optamistic about showing up on either Capital One, Chase or Amex.

I called Infiniti to see if would remove the 1 late payment but they said NO! I also called my credit union and asked will they remove the late payments since they have first hand knowledge on why the payments were late they also said NO.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

OK. after reading the entire Thread. this is a tough call to say the least. Lets get the commonality. GTE. I know just from the fact you have GTE as your credit union you are in the Tampa Bay area as myself. now you said 3 times late in the last 6 months. hmm. late is being one thing. Were any of them over 30 days late? because you do know that the CEO of the credit union is available at The main Branch many times on Dale Mabry and is always Glad to talk to members. including myself before. but since they are on your report im guessing they all are over 30 days. Also.  nisaan financial since it is barely a year old. All you could do is good will them. The good thing as that approachs 2 years old. It will have very little effect on your scores. But will have some affect never the less. Good you have the police working on your case trying to get your money back from the bank. Also. Looking at the Student loan. is that in Deferment or something? im trying to put my self in your shoes and see what is best. As far as your wish list. many things are still available to you based simply from where your Ex and EQ Scores are. even Tu could get you a couple of Cards being in the 630's, Im just wondering how your utilization Differs from each report? Are some things reporting on some reports and not on others? Just questions to help me understand before going further into this.

Re: Non savvy consumer needs help from savvy consumers

Thank you so much again Pizza! This was the insight I was looking for. Reading your response gave me hope at a time I felt like my world was coming down on me.

The student loans arent due to fall off until August 2018 because that I when the loan was sold to the other creditor.

The utilization should report below 10% because the balance is now $360 of $5000

I will keep you informed with my progess and I will not a signle decision until im advised to do so.

Re: Non savvy consumer needs help from savvy consumers

Yes, I was thinking despite all the things that happened. Most of the cards on his list are attainable. especially if he goes in store. They will generally overlook minor Derogs as they are called. i think the biggest lates are 60-120 day lates. no collections. But lates although hurting the score. are still considered minor derogs. although still derogs. hmm. I would really be Goodwilling GTE however. Since you  lost the money from them as well. I would go in a do a meeting with an exec at branch. Don't expect a return of your money until the Investigation is complete. however they could show you a little goodwill by removing the lates from your report until this matter is resolved. After the truth comes out that you did not withdraw money and they return it to you. Then it would be even a stronger relationship. Keep me informed on where you are in the progress of this situation.

Re: Non savvy consumer needs help from savvy consumers

@Yes I live in South Tampa and before the remodel the tellers there knew me by first name, some still do. However the fruad occured at the branch on 56th street and they used the web cam teller machine to make the withdraws.

I was late 31 days 3 months in a row.

The student loans were in some type of student loan forgiveness program... after 12 months of on time payment they would consolidate all the loans into one and I been making payments on them since August 2011.

My infiniti was a lease which is now over. They may accept a GW letter now that the loan is over but the late payment was my fault. I will own up to that. It was during my birthday month and I was traveling for two weekand I simply assumed I pay it.

My wish list is mainly store cards and that really all i care about. I just need them to help inject more funds my busuness. It is good to know I may qualify for some cards with my current scores but I want to wait until the scores reflect a higher rating.

My utilization differs because my Transunion report didnt update my card balance. Experian is the correct percentage. Equifax dont show my credit card at all and I have been working with GTE to get it show even though I know my score will be affected once the late payments show. As of now it appears like my profile is perfect with just the one late car payment. I was going to app for cards that only pull Equifax beccause it dont reflect any late credit card payments. ( your thoughts on that )

Thank you again for your input! I will stop contacting members care and go visit the main branch and see what the CEO has to say. I will keep you posted with what the CEO says or do.

Re: Non savvy consumer needs help from savvy consumers

I pretty much Echo what Pizza and Taxi has stated.  This was alot to take in and took me awhile to read through the post and digest it.  This is a tough situation you are in.   I think the toughest parts are the recent lates which are going to hurt you the most.  As Taxi stated along with Pizza and a few others GW the CEO/EO of the CU and get those lates removed especially since the CU has been dragging their feet on making you whole again from the fraud that happened against your personal bank account (if they are reputable CU they will make that account whole again and put the money back in your account, they should of already taken your word on it and done that, but for whatever reason they are fighting you on that.  Hopefully that will be resolved soon once again take it up to the EO/CEO level and get some urgency behind getting your funds reinstanted along with that lates removed a GW for having identity theft against you, I don't think that is to much to ask from the CU if they care about their image and want to keep your business.

The thing that concerns me the most are the recent lates along with the student loans, you need to work your butt off to get those lates removed as stated by other posters and I stated above those are very very recent and that is going to be a tough pill for any lender to swallow on them being so recent, so make that your first priority.  I am a bit concerned on your student loans as well, although the damage has been done there already and there is little chance of getting that removed.  Also student loans if backed by the gov't don't they stay with you for life and will garnish your paychecks?  Or are these private loans from a bank that are not backed by the gov't?  If that is the case I probably wouldn't try touch those due to DOFD type of thing. Depending on the amounts as well, depends on the CA whether they are going to seek a judgemetn against you. You can go into the rebuiding section that people with alot more knowledge than myself can help you with that area of things.

I am going to re-read over the whole post again and see if I can add anymore to my thoughts how to help you.   Pizza is a good resource along with many others here and alot of us including myself have been through tough times.  This is just a more unique scenario than I typically see myself on this forum.

Best of luck and it really sucks this happened to you!
