Prequalification sites and scores

I didn't know about online prequalification sites until I read a thread here. When one tries it, does it ding the credit score?   There are some private companies that I see have sites for multiple ones. Are they safe or should we only use the direct credit card sites?  Thanks

Re: Prequalification sites and scores

IN general it will not affect your score as they will be using a SP (although it may not be up to date depending on the bank and your relationship with them)

When doing these prequalification, a general rule of thumb is that if the interest rate disclosed is a Range then it is NOT a pre-approval. If the rate give is a single rate then your chances of getting the card are much better.

Regarding the aggregation sites, some are good, some are just marketing and presenting offers based on what they get a kickback for and has nothing to do with your credit. Most bank pre-qualification sites are GTG with the exception of Amex - it is just marketing there.

Capital One, Chase, Citi, BoA, etc pre qualification site are all GTG

It doesn't hurt your credit score to try.  The only true ore qualification is from the actual creditor's site.  Remember though that even if you're 'pre approved', it's not a guarantee of an actual approval and you still can be denied.  Some banks sites are better than others so might check here if you have any questions.

Re: Prequalification sites and scores

Capital One seems to be a true preapproval. Barclay's is pretty decent as well. I know some of the other sites are definitely not a prequal. Would be great for everyone to post which sites are true and which anyone can get preapproved for.

Re: Prequalification sites and scores

Cap1 seems to be the most reliable... Don't trust Bank of America, Discover, Barclay unless there a specific apr rate...

I agree on Cap 1. Chase also. I was pre qual on both, and received the APR slated.

Re: Prequalification sites and scores

Citi seems and I've heard is extremely reliable. They also seem to go off of pretty recent data.

In my experience, my scores have been in the 670-700 range for a good year or so. I've tried the prequal site but have never gotten approved. In the last 2 weeks or so I've had my score go up a good 20 points or so, the highest it's been in years, maybe just high enough I guess because as of a few days ago, I was finally preapproved for one of Citi's cards.

Re: Prequalification sites and scores

I get Citi mailers all the time, for multiple cards. But I've never had success on their prequal site. Chase prequal worked for me as did Capital One. My scores are now over 50 points higher than when I got those cards over six months ago, but now I have no success on Citi, Cap One or Chase. Barclays shows I'm prequalified for one of their cards.

Re: Prequalification sites and scores

I know this is an older thread, but here's a question.

If Capital One (for one) doesn't soft pull when you fill in the prequalification info, does that mean you're blacklisted?

I've seen soft pulls from several other companies, but none from Cap1.

I don't think I ever thought about them not soft pulling on a pre qual. What happens when you put the info in, Nothing? Also, do you think there is any reason they would blacklist you to begin with?
