Re: Pulled the trigger for the Ritz

the best i could do is find a link for 2 nights with $3k spend (linked off Ritz site) rather than Chase's off the rack 2 for $4k current offer

You did excellent given the two available offers.  There's typically a better offer always floating around in most cases.

Re: Pulled the trigger for the Ritz

I better be getting some Amex retention love when my Plat comes up for renewal in a month.  (Spent just over $40k on the card this year and based on FT reports i've been hoping for a $200 statement credit. I am awash in MRs and minimizing cash outlay now would be ideal.  (plus i have a few more Amex cards with AFs clustering over next couple of months).

Maybe it wasn't such a bright idea to pile another pair of $400's onto my plate, LOL.

Re: Pulled the trigger for the Ritz

Data point. Called recon and the rep did give me some more info regarding my earlier call. He said that the first rep did recommend the approval for $15k then sent it to secondary (or whatever that's called) and that approval should be done by tomorrow.

Hopefully Marriott doesn't bottleneck this any further and they just generate me a new rewards number.

Pretty nice limit if that is what you end up gettingSmiley Happy.  Pulling for you to get approved and get it prior to year end as well

Just keep in mind, AmEx Plat retention offers are not very common.  Granted, they'll take in consideration your previous history and spending (plus a variety of other internal criteria) but just be prepared in the event they're not willing to provide any type of retention offer at renewal time.

Sounds good Lager. Use the two nights on the Ritz in Paris, near the Louvre. just stay away from that honour Bar. $30 Euro peanuts do not mix with wine

Re: Pulled the trigger for the Ritz

hi @FinStar

Plat retentions not common?   I've had luck with retentions on almost all of my Amex cards.  we will see this year.  Last year I got 15k MRs for Plat, 5k for PRG, which i downgraded a month later to Green.

There were a number of big Amex hits this year, not the least of which was loss of Costco, which drives significant spend for our household. Another biggie was the starwood sale, which isn't Amex' fault but still chips away at the entire value proposition.

I do appreciate Amex. Amex offers also help subsidize the AF.   They are also second to none when it comes to handling car rental disputes, like my experience in Europe this summer:  Amex stepped up and handled a $2500 bogus charge.  They never asked for anything besides an email documenting my side of the story.  With Chase, I had a potential $250 chargeback and had to deal with physical paperwork (merchant ultimately credited me but no thanks to chase).

so having Amex throw me a bone would be nice, given the spend this year:

Plat 40k

SPG 18k

Everyday Pref 15k

Had I spent the 40k on my United club card i would have gotten yet another economy RT to Europe at 60k UA miles. +~$100, and 40k MRs don't give me nearly as much value.

The Centurion lounges are really nice but useless on European layovers.  Priority Pass is not nearly as usefull as full United Club membership with access to most Star Alliance lounges.

Even Chase offered me $150 statement credit when it came time to renew my United Club card.

Now, despite my complaints I appreciate the program I don't intent to close any of my cards, especially since they've all been backdated beyond ten years.  But bulk of these AFs are coming up now so I'll need to ring up the EO once again.

You can always check since I'm sure if you are a valued customer from an AmEx perspective they could likely offer a retention bonus to subsidize the AF.  It's one of those YEMV situations.  And, if you have received similar offers in the past, then it's possible you could get another one.  I was simply stating as a general rule for a variety of individuals who have the Plat who do not fit a similar criteria like your AmEx profile.
