Here's a rough description; when you visit an online store that has a credit card provided by Comenity Bank, load your shopping cart with several items and go to the checkout page. If you have popup windows turned on and if you haven't chosen to "opt out" of prescreened offers, you may see a popup window appear saying something like, "Congratulations, you've been pre-approved for (name of store card)!" If you choose to accept the offer, you'll be taken to another page to fill in certain personal information. They'll ask you for (usually) the last four digits of your Social Security number. Enter all the information requested, and if the computer decides you meet the standards, you'll be approved for a new credit card with a soft pull of your credit report (which, unlike a hard pull, doesn't put a ding on your credit score).
The SCT is a highly useful way for people with low or iffy credit to get credit cards without having to risk reducing their credit scores through having their reports HP'ed, but it needs to be used sparingly. People often make the mistake of acquiring a lot of store cards this way, most of which they'll never actually use. This can come back to hurt them in a couple of ways; many banks that issue credit cards and other loans don't like to see a lot of retail cards on a prospective customer's profile because it's a possible indicator of someone who has a bad credit history who's trying to acquire a lot of credit the easy way; and Comenity itself is known to be an often-skittish lender that has a tendency to take AA's (adverse actions) of various sorts, up to and including closing all one's accounts, for sometimes-hard-to-figure-out reasons. That being said, we do know that obtaining too many Comenity-issued cards, with a total exposure that is very high, and trying too often to get credit-line increases on those cards (along with not managing those cards responsibly overall) can and will cause you to come to Comenity's negative notice.
Overstock does ask for your full SSN, but it IS a soft pull.
@VipreArmed wrote:Just curious because I was on Overstock and a Preapproval Popup showed up at checkout, is this the shopping trick everyone is talking about? I noticed it asked for my full SSN number so I wasn't sure.
I don't play on getting it but just wanted to be sure in the future if I see one, what does it look like. Because after searching the forums it seems as if they would only ask for my last 4 of my SSN and not the full or is that depending on the website/merchant?
overstock grows fast too helps alot with untilization....But the best SCT card has to be sportsmanguide...it's a visa without a hard pull.

I've actually been wondering about Overstock CLI's (not that I need one right now) - when, on average, is the best time to request the first one after having opened the card? 30, 60, 90 days or what? Do you have to wait until a certain number of statements have cut? Can you request a specific amount or do you just hit the button and roll the dice?
For me it was after I think 5 months. They've given me an increase every month since then of $300. I started out pretty low ($750) and am still low at $1650 but it's higher and better increases than my couple other Comenity cards. Do be careful with them- a lot of items are more expensive than elsewhere but there are some deals to be had. I bought our matress through them with the 12 month financing and after 4 or 5 months months with it, I am still in love. Can't beat a king size foam/gel matress for $500- something. You can ask for a certain amount over the phone with robolady but online it's just a blanket request.
with overstock for me it's about every 4 months....with the other comenity cards like sportsman guide it's every 6 months.
I've added a note to my calendar then...I'll test for a CLI on Overstock sometime in late September, and if that doesn't work, in October.
The first 4 months I had the Overstock account I was getting CLI every 30 days of 300....that stopped now and it's about every 4 months now. hitting the luv button is a soft pull it doesn't hurt.
