Re: Shopping Cart Trick

This.  Same here.  I have three (NY and Co, VS and Overstock).  I used very little on the VS and Overstock but nothing at all on NY and Co so far.  All three are reporting.

Re: Shopping Cart Trick

Here is what I experienced thus far using the trick for < 1 week.

My process: I used Google Chrome Incognito mode for every instance and these were all snagged within 1 evening. I typically added around <$250 for each successful approval and never signed up for any of their email subscriptions.

Victoria's Secret: I already had an open and active account with them. I logged in, added about $250 worth of merchandise which is certainly more than I normally spend in one purchase with them. I didn't remove my payment method, I just went to the checkout screen and nearly instantly got the popup - which did specify that it was a $500 CL and asked for the last 4 of my SS# to process. Instant Approval and a 2 week window for the card. No email confirmation ever came through.

Pottery Barn: I created a new account and put my items in my cart. Once I clicked to the Payment page there was a small, embedded message - not a pop-up- that told me I was pre-approved for a store card. It did not tell me the limit on the offer, only APR/Fees, agreement info, etc. It asked for my full SS#. I did not give them my full number, but opted to format it as: 000-00-#### instead. It worked like a charm and was offered a $1500 CL. I received an email confirmation immediately and was given a 2 week window for the card.

Williams & Sonoma: Virtually identical situation to Pottery Barn, no pop-up but an embedded message. No marketed CL on the offer and also asked for my full SS#. I did exactly the same thing for this and was approved for $1000 CL. Email and 2 week window came immediately.

Loft: I created a new account, added items to cart. Once I got to the payments page I received an actual pop-up with the offer but no dollar amount for the CL. It asked for the last 4 of my SS#. I was instantly approved for $250 CL. Email came and was told 2 weeks as well.

HSN: I received a pop-up once I got to the payments page and was asked for my full SS#. I formatted just like above and did not get an instant approval for it or a dollar amount for the CL on the offer. I was told I would receive a letter in 7-10 days once they review my application.

---

The next day I tried Boscov's just to see if it would work and it did. However* I had to start typing in a CC# before the pop-up came up. I also was asked for the last 4 of my SS# and was not instantly approved. I will receive an answer once they review in 8-10 days.

I would almost bet there is a limit of 4 actively submitted Store Card Applications for this bank and the others have to be reviewed for authenticity or will be denied based on too many open accounts at once. I am not anticipating those 2 going through and will not mind either way. I am really just interested in experimenting with this.

Sites I tried - and was unsuccessful on before & after getting the ones above: Wayfair (I tried this most as it's the most desirable to me), Dillard’s, Total Rewards, Sportsman Guide, Big Lots (had heard they were a part of the trick, not sure), Crate and Barrel, Express, GameStop and Ann Taylor.

Once the cards actually arrive for the ones I was told I was approved for - Wayfair and/or Crate and Barrel and Abercrombie are honestly the only other ones I actually want and will try for. I got an Overstock card, before having knowledge of this trick, back in May. I actively applied for that, and it was a SP as it never showed on my credit report (Vantage). I actually learned about the trick, because i wanted to know why the bank only did a SP to my suprise which led me down this rabbit hole.

I hope this information helps someone on here. There were a lot of great posts that helped me along so I wanted to share the love for getting credit!

*If anyone has any suggestions on helping me increase my chances on getting a Wayfair, Abercrombie or Crate and Barrel store card, please leave a note.*

Re: Shopping Cart Trick

that's a lot of new accounts....that's not good for your credit score. I would slow down and just use and pay the cards you have and wait for a real credit card offer ...but the more of the SCT cards you add the harder it will be to get the prime cards.

Re: Shopping Cart Trick

I am curious why you say that's not good for my credit score? As in just opening several new accounts without inquiries lowers my score? My understanding was new accounts wouldn't neccessarily affect your credit espeically if your credit lines bumped up $3-4K and there are no actual hard hits. Enlighten me on that if you have more to share. : )

The average age of accounts is a pretty big factor in your score. Each new card lowers the average age, so that can definitely drop your score, even without inquiries. If your credit history is relatively short, it won’t make such a big impact. If you have a fairly long history with some accounts that have been open for a few years, it could mean a pretty big drop in score.

Re: Shopping Cart Trick

Thanks for the feedback.

Getting a handful of new accounts at the same time will alter my average age of credit by about 1 year. I just crunched the numbers and the average dropped about 13 months, which is still keeping me in the 5-6 yr range of average age which is where I was previously. My credit line will be increasing by about $3200 which will possibly increase my score by over 30 points. I will be very suprised if the offset is not in my benefit based on these 2 major changes but i will absolutely be monitoring it to see how it fairs.

Re: Shopping Cart Trick

There are no absolutes here and the debate goes on
And of course there are many moving parts

But general ppl get caught up in ... opening X account w/o a HP which is 1 issue but the mere opening of New Credit...no matter HOW one obtains it is by nature of RISK scoring an added 'possible' RISK, period...
Now one can debate what might or might not happen based upon other criteria but sticking to this one narrow subject...the opening of New Credit accounts for 10% of the FICO score and is distinguished from an inquiry hit, that's just a Fact.

I use an example of a guy dating 2 girls successfully, normally the process of the cheater adding new girls to the mix might be going to 'Da club thus taking on HPs + the simple RISK involved in adding more women to the mix ( risk of getting caught/ slipping up etc)
Just because he doesn't go to the club ( erasing the HP) and now adds his new girls via some website doesn't erase the risk of popping up next month with 5 new girlfriends reporting when there were only 2 last month ....the bottom line is there are now 7 and 5 new wildcards
Same thing here...who cares whether a HP or not happened .. are those 2 new car loans reporting on your credit?

The existence of NEW debt and the ability to create new debt ( via unsecured TLs) is OF COURSE of note and importance too many ppl think oh well the SCT allows them to blindly add LINES of CREDIT w/o anybody noticing
Are you serious...yeah the model is deaf, dumb and blind to information being REPORTED!!!

As mentioned, for a builder just trying to add foundation to a non-existent profile what the hay ( IMO the SCT is most helpful to such situations) but for other profiles grabbing a bunch of $250 CLs at Bert n Ernie's Seaside Gift Shop is for WHAT...the High of an approval???

Re: Shopping Cart Trick

What pains me is folks not understanding that this behavior can be seen as RISK by the scoring model ( remember more girls/card more 'possible' issues) in addition to the AAOA and all that gibberish the POINT is a growing profile can STUNT it's growth with this side nonsense chasing 'toy' TLs

The OP ( bless her) and many like her get caught up reaching to early in the game and get stuck with bronze 'medals' concerned about $3200 in TOTAL added CL across a bunch of baby cards where with better management the same 'player' might have been awarded some Silver or Gold hadn't the chips been cashed in so early
SLs of 5k, 10k or more are daily occurrences not that big a deal but when 'they' program folks to play "small" ball sometimes the extra baggage keeps you in the minors longer than one would have been over IMO crap store cards vs history building that leads to Mega TLs that can be used anywhere...

Not upset with the account seekers I don't like the GAME and the way so many get tricked into playing Checkers when the game is Chess
