For best odds, yes.  To get a CLI?  Not necessarily.  I had intro offers on both of my cards and had balances being carried and got my CLI's.  However, YMMV.  As always, it's not just the balances that matter but your credit as well.

Is it better to ask for 3x on the luv button, chat or phone?

Think of it this way:  does any of the 3 change your credit or other factors that are used in apprivng a CLI?  No matter how you request it your credit, income, usage, etc are the same.

I did it all like I supposed to and got denied. Received my letter today and it states my denial was for "Youre FICO Score" Experian was pullled and its a 633 so not too surprised. Oh well I guess I'll just have to wait.

I was denied also with a 700+ FICO.  I was told that it was because I had a BK 9 years ago.  I said why was I approved then.  IDIOTS!!  I told them to close my account.  I have way better cards with 5 times the CL of AMEX.  I dumped CapOne today.  I love kicking these companies to the curb.

I believe what they approved you for intially was the extent based on the items on your file and nothing further until something improved. In this case, perhaps when the BK falls off.

I didn't and I still received the 3x cli. YMMV

FWIW, At least you have CLs from banks that have denied me (Citi & Discover) so there is something they like about you that they don't about me Smiley Sad

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide Discussion Thread

Unfortunately I had some bad luck with my 60 day CLI the other day because I'm a dumbass and forgot to first check when their most recent SP was. Turns out the most recent SP was only 3 weeks after I was approved for the card and my score was temporarily low at the time.

Account was opened 07/31 and last SP was 08/20. The EX fico listed on denial letter was 649 based on the 08/20 pull; current EX fico is 701. Argh! That was the only reason listed on the denial letter.

So now I guess I'll just have to watch for a new SP and try again in 90 days. I'm kind of tempted to try again sooner though if I see a new SP.

Initial CL: $800 (Costco TE)
61 day CLI: Denied
Amex Utilization @ CLI: 14%
Overall Utilization @ Last EX Soft Pull: Unsure, but probably ~5%
Ratio of Income/(Overall Available Credit) (4 decimal places): .3529
Number of new credit lines opened since opening Amex account or last Amex CLI: 0
Total $$ value of all transactions since Amex account opening or last Amex CLI: $1,091 (PIF multiple times...never went over 30%)

That's odd...  Amex soft pulled me at the time I requested the update.  My scores were actually higher the previous time they softed me.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide Discussion Thread

I requested a $20,000 limit and was approved for $17,800 Smiley Happy

Initial CL: $10,000
61 day CLI: $7,800
Amex Utilization @ CLI: 27%
Overall Utilization @ Last EX Soft Pull: Do not know
Ratio of Income/(Overall Available Credit) (4 decimal places):
Number of new credit lines opened since opening Amex account or last Amex CLI: 0
Total $$ value of all transactions since Amex account opening or last Amex CLI: About $3,700 (PIF first statement in three installments)

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide Discussion Thread

Greetings,

So my 3x CLI 61st day for my ED is coming up in less than a week.  I have a few things which I deliberately did in preparation for my CLI date.  Hopefully for the better chance at getting an approval.

1) I currently have 2 statements both cut with balances around 1.3% of my initial 8K limit (100-150 dollars worth both statements)

2) I intentionally did not charge anything for roughly 2 weeks prior to my last statement cut in an attempt to keep my soft pulls close to 0 as possible.   I paid my outstanding balance about a week and a half before my due date and a week and about a week before my statement cut.  I did charge a little over 150 dollars in my card during my cut date which is now reporting.

3) When my CLI date reaches the 61st day next Friday 10/10/2014 i would have charged a total of 4300K on the card which will all be paid in full.

My question is how is everyone monitoring the soft pulls?  Is there a service i need to pay for or are they getting it through the bureaus?  Do any successfull 3x CLI veterans think i have a chance at the full 24,000 amount?  My entire current credit available to income ratio is currently at 21%..    It's my first post sorry if i missed any important details.

The way I check them is to go to experian.com, go to the dispute section, and select the option to start a new dispute. On the following page I use the option "Access by Personal Information". I don't actually do a dispute, but just by starting the process it puts you into an interface where you can see your whole report, including soft pulls.
