AmEx did not counter me when I tried to raise my BCP CL last year. I did an online CLI request from $7k to $15k and they immediately requested a 4506t. I called and spoke with someone and she was able to find out that she could do another $3k to bring me to $10k without the 4506t at that time (she tried stepping down a couple thousand at a time until she got to where it would go through). I accepted, and she siad no more CLI without 4506t - which did no turn out to be true.
Bottom line, if you go too high there may be no counteroffer for a CLI request on the computer, just a 4506t request instead. If that happens, consider calling and seeing what a CSR can do.
And FWIW, ignored the 4506t request last year and did a CLI this month to bring it to the $15k I originally asked for last year - without providing the tax transcripts. Time really does heal all wounds - or at least soothes the AmEx actuaries.
Question about providing your tax info to Amex:
Say you have a SL of $10k and you request a 3X CLI to $30k and they request the 4506t or whatever it's called (I know nothing about this). Are they asking for this based on the $30k request? By providing this documentation are your chances of receiving the $30k limit requested greater? If you opt not to provide the document, will they just counter with a lesser amount?

I can only speak for my case, but I was not countered, they only requested the 4506t. I then called and the CSR I spoke with tried lower amounts until it went through, since I wasn't willing to release my tax transcripts. I was then told that without documentation I would not receive any further CLI's.
I will note that the information about no more CLI's ended up being untrue in the long haul (the tax transcript request was last year, I just did a further CLI on that card this year without providing anything) but the implication is that, at least in the short term, you won't be extended any further credit without the documents being released.
Understood. Those in this thread that have requested a 3X CLI after 61+ days, who was asked to provide those tax documents? I'm wondering how often it happens.
Another thing, it's now July 1st which means we're exactly half way through 2016. If Amex were to request tax documents now, they'd be getting info that's 6 months old. Say an individual has changed jobs, gotten a raise, etc. that today has them making significantly more money than their tax statements that are 6+ months old state, but when you applied (in the last 6 months) for Amex and got approved it was with your current income? I would think that from their perspective they would think you lied about your income, when in fact they're just looking at your "old" income at this point. Is there any way around that, such as providing them with current pay stubs?
@Anonymous wrote:Got instant approval for $10k today on the BCE. In 61 days is it a bit crazy to ask for $30k (3X CLI)? Should I just go for it regardless? Any opinions on this?
It's my understanding that they will ask for tax documents to support ability to pay over 25k limit. They also may counter it or outright decline. Whichever way it goes, if you don't get it, it'll be a soft pull.

Not accurate - I went to $30k on one AmEx without the request for tax transcripts. It wasn't until I applied for a second card and tried to do a CLI on the new card that I was asked. At that point, I was at $32k total exposure, and I went to $35k total exposure without submitting the tax information even though it was requested. I'm now at $40k with them, still no tax transcripts provided.
I am sure others have larger amounts also without providing tax transcripts, I'm just sharing my first-hand experience.

I am now but I'm also a new poster to myFico, so no siggy for now. There's been more postings than not about the requesting for supporting documents for CLI's for 25k and over. Don't supply them and see what happens, may get lucky!
Or they may not even ask! As I said, $30k was not an issue for me, it was going past that where it got sticky. But even without the tax documents I was still able to get another modest CLI from them this past month. As I've said earlier about this, time apparently does heal all wounds with them.
Today was day 62 on my DH's BCE. SL of $1400. Requested 3x to $4200 and was approved. Data point- We do have a balance showing but have PIF each time. All scores are between 710 and 720. Hope this helps!
