Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

I see from your history that your Amex BCE was approved for a $4,100 SL.  It would be unusual that such a limit did not come with a signup bonus like $150 or $200 cashback if you spend at least $1,000 in the first 3 months.  That said you'd probably qualify for a CLI at 60 days.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

@MaizeandBlue Thank you so much! So I dont remember reading anything while I was applying, or anything in the welcome package, but I chatted with a rep and they said 1k spend in 92 days and its a nearly automatic 200 dollar statement credit! Now the double edged sword with this is now I gotta put 1k on a credit card...and uhhh the wife doesnt know about this one so may be hard for daily use and then pay as I go. At the very least i am gonig to put my Denver trip on this card soon (about 700 bucks)..hmm have to think about what else I could use card for.

Also you said I should qualify for the 61 day CLI based on my SL, is usualyl a higher limit than the minimum a "tell" from AMEX that they are willing to give you more as long as you dont mess up to begin?

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

Hey guys, today is my 61st day & I'll be requesting my CLI. I need some insight from you guys. My utilization has been high & I've been doing cash advances but PIF. Amex site shows my Fico as 712 right now & it was 709 when I was approved for a SL of $5K. At the moment I'm about 50% utilization with 42% utiliztion across all credit BUT that just hit report today & is not on the report that Amex last pulled (as far as I can tell since the 713 score was the most recent).

Income is ~$200K & $23,900 avail credit (on today's report) & 1 new account showing (although it was actually opened prior to Amex).

Should I pay down the balance before I try for the CLI? Do you think I'll be ok since I've been PIF?

TIA!

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

My 61st day was today, so after carefully reading many post on the 3X increase, I just decided to go for it(very nervously).
My Experian fico score is 751 with 8% UTI on my Everyday Cash card, which I first got a couple of months ago. SL 10k.

Hit the submit button and instantly approved for 30k. Looking for feedback for the 30K IV/FR odds? I've read conflicting amounts on what causes a IV/FR. Just want to be prepared. Thanks.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

If they didn’t ask for the IV you won’t get asked for it. 6 months from now you can ask for 40 or so and work your way down from there, hitting the back button and asking for 1K less until it grants the increase.

Delicious; I’m interested every much in your post! You’ve taken out cash advances on your American Express and they didn’t close the account?? That’s nuts!! As for if you should pay in full before the request, that’s up to you. I carried a balance for about four months and PIF week before my 3X and got it...

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

Anyone have insight or tips... I have the ED and BC cards.. ED is 11 months and BC is 10 months.. so both new, under 1 year.

The ED card was SL'd with 2K and BC SL'd at 1K.... so very pedestrian SL's -- but hey, it's better than the dreaded 7-10 day letter..

I carry a moderate balance on both -- maybe 30% util on both... of course all payments on time.

My discover card acct says my Fico today is 689... and that's about 10 point and higher than it was at the general time I got these 2 Amex cards.

Now... here's the curveball ...
14 years ago I had a Ch 7.... so it's well off my CR's by now... BUT... I had - and was a part of the ch 7 - an Amex Optima (I think that was the card name) and was discharged at about $3,000

So... fast forward to this year... I have tried for the 3X CLIs at each window of opportunity .. and was denied full stop.

The reason was "previous delinquencies on one or more of your American Express accounts"

Now, I know it's not either of the two I have now.. and in the past I had a Amex gold charge card (account closed by Amex at time of Ch 7, but no charge off balance) and the Optima I noted earlier.

So.... clearly I'm on their __it list... and yes, I get it... yes, I don't blame them.. yes, it was my fault... etc etc.. all true.

But, what can be done now, today to overcome this apparent black-list like status.

I've spoken with my retired attorney who handled my Ch7 and was told to be very very careful about making any kind of comment or even discussing that old debt with Amex as it is possible for me to effectively/accidentally/unintentionally reaffirm it and thereby bringing it back to life again.

My next 3X CLI window is middle Apri -- so just wondering if anyone has insight or data points -- or just trudge forward....

For this I have a personal data point to provide... but you might not like it.

I'm on the same "list"... I included an Amex Green card in BK7 back in 2000, and I got 'back in' with Amex in 2015 with a BCP and another Green.

To 'cut to the chase' every time I've tried for a CLI I've received the same letter... I've not been able to overcome it.  However, after around 18 months my BCP did get an auto-CLI of 3x, bringing it to $3k (previously $1k) and about a year after that I got another auto-CLI to bring the CL to $7.5, which is very usable for me.  My typical monthly usage was $300-$500 each month, and I did let the balance report.

Also, I app'ed for a Delta Gold in 2016 with the intention to move some of the credit line to the BCP, but it was also only approved for $1k, and they wouldn't let me move any of it over.  Basically, it was for nothing.  Smiley Frustrated

At the time I got the Delta Gold, I closed the (new) Green and applied for a PRG.  No issues there; my spending limit is healthy, and they even gave me 'Pay Over Time' with a limit of $35k.

Finally, in January 2017 (last year) I applied for an ED to 'hold' my MR points should I decide to close my PRG.  I was expecting another spectacular $1k limit, but they surprised me by giving me an instant approval for $8k.

TL;DR... I still get denied when I request CLIs (as of last summer, anyway) but they do give auto-CLIs if your use warrants it, and with time new approvals will have more generous SLs as well.

Disclaimer:  I'm not complaining about my situation with Amex; I know BK has consequences, and I'm happy to be back at all.  I'm only sharing here to provide a data point for others.  Smiley Wink

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

Those are great DPs UncleB. To often we read all the good stuff about those who DO get the 3X CLI that we feel like we can "easily" get it too. I felt frustrated all last year that I wasn't getting what I thought "everyone" was getting. Well, we're not all the same so AMEX won't treat us all the same. It helps to frame someone's expectations when both the good/bad are reported. I am happy with my AMEX experience as well even if they did make me sweat it out for Year 1.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

I applied for the BCE end of october with a 727 fico. Ive used the card regularly, hit my 1k pretty quickly and pay off every month. Income is 140k. My utilization across all my cards sits at about 9%. My fico now is 722 so 5pts lower. I want to go buy a good tv and want to ask for the 3x cli. Idk why im so afraid to do this but i am! Of course  was afraid to even apply for the card to begin with but was instantly approved for 10k. Should i go ahead and ask for 30k or should I keep it lower so they dont need me to send in all sorts of stuff? I dont mind sending them what they need but id rather just get the instant approval. I was told if they ask for it that i can back out and put in lower amounts in increments of 1k  until they approve. Ugh..what should i do! lol
