OK so double checking on something after reading the 3X CLI thread.

Today is 181-days since I requested a CLI for BCP and was approved.

I mistakingly tried for a CLI on both Amex Business accounts 11-days later and was denied on both.

Can a CLI be request now on one of those business accounts 181-days after the BCP approval, or do I have to wait until 181-days after the Business accounts denial? After reading the information I am guessing its the "181-days after the BCP approval"...but wanted to make sure.

Also, the business account that I want to get a CLI on originally had a SL of $2K. But I moved some from another account making it now $5K. Can I request 3X of the $2K ie asking for $6K more making my total on that account now $11K? I know, confusing... Smiley LOL

I don't know anything about the interaction of biz and personal Amex cards, so I have nothing to say about your first question.

But the second one... confusing, yes. I don't see where $11k comes from. Are you asking if your CLI cap is based on $2k or $5k? The answer is $5k. So you can request a new CL of $15k. If granted, that would be 3x.

Yeah, my $11K was wrong, sorry about that.

So your saying even though the original SL was $2K but I moved $3K over to it thus making it $5K, I could have asked for 3 x $5K? I was thinking AMEX would go by my original SL and then 3X that (3 x $2K) meaning I would only get a $1K increase, if that makes any sense (I think I am making this more confusing than it should be lol)

It's moot now, because I got the dreaded 7-10 notification, and we all know what that is.

It's always 3X your current limit, so it'd be $15k here. The denial sucks, but can always ask for $15k next time. You'll get there eventually. I got denied at 61 days for my initial even though I started at 9k, but when I tried for 20k later on I got approved.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

here's one for the AMEX CLI gurus.  Yesterday I decided to try my luck and apply because I only had one inquiry on EX and my scores fall into possible approval range.  I was expecting a denial and was eager to see the steps I needed to take to get in.  To my surprise, I was approved for the Platinum and the Blue Cash Preferred.  I requested a CLI on the BCP but got a strange message. has anyone been successful at getting a starting credit limit increase after approval. My scores and inquiries are below.  I have gotten 2 new account in the past year not including the AMEX approvals.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

Very few get a CLI on approval. It's even less likely if you got a "training wheels" limit like $1k or $2K. That means you just barely made it in and you need to wait a bit until Amex is more comfortable with you as a customer. Try for CLI at 61 days and if you still get denied,  try again at 91 days after the last denial. Good luck!

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

I agree. I'm extremely grateful. I got in on a banana peel. I applied for the charge card first and then went for the BCP 3 hours later. I have a 8yr Bk still showing and have baddies (3) Cap1 with balance and a paid charge off, no collections. 12 open accounts paid as agreed and 13 closed account good pmt. oldest acct 18yr. avg age was 5 yr before the 2 AMEX card. 3% utilitization 8%dti

Rep's response was the same no CLI available. Wait 60 days. So it will either be 60days or 90days from app, correct?

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

61 and 91 days. If you try too soon, it's an automatic denial. Also, you might not get any CLI until your scores are higher in the 700s. It's not a guarantee that you will get 3x right away just because you got approved. Amex has become even more risk averse since the pandemic started. Just try to temper your expectations. Be happy you are in with Amex. If you follow the rules - PIF on time, put a good amount of usage on the cards...Amex will reward you when they feel comfortable

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

Sounds good.  Very excited to see things going uphill. I havent had a denial and got the current cards within the past 2-3years.  These will be treated with responsibility and used conservatively(use and PIF or over a couple of months). I read somewhere in here of folks applying too early at 61 and even 65 days.  NOt sute what day that is used to calculate or if its the state after you have pass 61 or 91 days.  I think I will try for the CLI at 70 and again at 100.... if unsuccessful (to be sure I met the date time frames).  Hoping for the CLI but knowing that it's no guarantee.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

It's 61 days after initial approval, 91 days after denial, or 181 days after approval. If you're too early, it does not reset the clock.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

Applied 67 days in. Was denied. Reasons were

-The length of time you have been a customer with American Express is too short

-The balances on your credit and/or charge card accounts are high relative to your income known to us

Second reason is fluff. Only card reporting a balance sleep number via synchrony bank at $402. With $28500 total limit across all cards.

First reason suggests either the clock started later than I thought or maybe it's 91+ days for some reason. Should I apply in a month or has anyone received that reason and not been able to apply for 3 months?

@Duriel - since the reasons were credit related (not based on a premature request), you'd need to wait 91+ days as your next window to submit another CLI request.

Re: The Definitive Amex 3X CLI Guide

@FinStar Thanks. I'm not looking for a million total credit limit or anything. It's a BCP so I'm only charging groceries, gas (unless I get approved for something with a higher Cashback), the occasional Uber and Netflix (my only streaming). I could live with the $1000 limit for a while. I just don't want to 😂. I will poke it in 95ish days just to be sure.
