My wife requested a CLI on her Discover card and was initially rejected because they couldn't verify employment. We'll call and get that fixed but on the letter was the following. It shows just how scoring will look for just about anything to critique.
The first one makes a little sense. I have two mortgages and the current balances are still pretty high compared to beginning balances.
Too many accounts with balances? I have eight open accounts and only three report a balance each month. Makes you wonder what they want.
The oldest account was opened 26 years ago. AAoA of nine years. Youngest account is two years old.
I guess I wanted to illustrate to others not to be too concerned with some of the denial reasons you may receive. Do all the right things and you'll be fine.
Cookie cutter responses are the best.
My favorite is "too many inquiries" when they pull a CR that hasn't had an inquiry in 18 months.
They got to list something...that is the best they could do![]()

Excellent to see this. No reason for denial. But goes to show. Score not everything.

Yup. "Too many inquiries" to me usually isn't just the reason why so and so didn't get approved for a card. Usually the very first reason they list on those is the most major factor.

Very interesting indeed. Take Nixon's experience with Diners not long ago... they listed "and the kitchen sink" as one of the broad reasons. ![]()

+1
I rest my Discover case from today. Thanks for sharing. ![]()
What strikes me is it sounds like they are telling you why your score was too low to qualify, but obviously that can't be right.
Discover is just weird, plain and simple.
Looking at the signatures/posts around here makes me think they would rather give a high CL and/or a big CLI to someone with a sub 700 score than a +800 score.
I had the same problem with mine until I finally gave in and closed it a few days ago in frustration. (I know, AAoA/utilization and all that but I don't care, they ticked me off)
I tried several time to get a CLI from my $2K limit, only to get a HP and be told I don't qualify due to “too high of balances” or some other hogwash.
I never carried more that 7% on anything that revolves, and never more than 3 with a balance.
Not one to usually go for conspiracy theories, but I think Discover (and Chase Bank) keep some sort of 10+ year blacklist going.
Maybe long ago, in a galaxy far away you said something to them they didn’t care for?

Good to see that I am not the only one that gets such interesting explanations.....well whoever gave me too many new accounts has a valid point but the rest I received is simply nonsense. As long as it is not a denial I read them - think about them and for some points have a little fun with them ![]()
