I got an email that I was "pre-selected" to apply for the USAA Classic Platinum MasterCard. I was a USAA member a very long time ago, but didn't leave on the best of terms. I was under the impression you had to be a member to hold one of their cards. The email has my hackles raised a bit, although I did see recently USAA did a SP on my credit report. The email subject line was: Start improving your credit - here's how.
Is this a legit offer for rebuilding credit/credit card?

Have you contacted USAA? I would. There is so much Internet fraud out there that I would check to make sure it was a legitimate offer Know you said that the relationship did not end good, but you need to know this is real. if so, why not try again. USAA was the first to give me a $5K card, so they are okay in my book. Good luck OP.

You might still be a member. I had a little falling out with them almost 5 years ago, and when I straightened out my CO's they reinstated my login access, and there were my savings and checking accounts with about 2 dollars each still sitting there.
Also, a week or two after settling the CO with them they approved me for the Classic Amex.
The COs are long gone, but I have no idea what my login was. It gave me a call in error when I tried to retrieve it. I'm not sure I want to dig up that can of worms!

Obviously your curiosity is piqued. However, you've got some good limits in your profile, so it's not as if you need USAA anymore, so I'd leave in the worms in the ground.
If the email is 'legit', it will have a gray box in the upper right hand corner and in blue text it will say "USAA Security Zone", your full name (in my case, no initial or suffix), and the last four digits of your USAA member number.
If these are missing, it's fake. If these are present, (and the data is correct) it should be legit.
If you determine that the message is legitimate, it might be worth a phone call to reset your ID. If you were still on their "list" I seriously doubt you would have received the email at all... being a mostly online bank, they generally don't mess up something like that. ![]()

I just got approved for this exact card from them a week or two ago. No pre approved offers from them or anything. I've been a full member (I'm active duty) with them for a little over 3 years now, had a secured card with them for about the same length. I just recently closed it, apped for that classic card, and instantly approved for 2k limit. The apr is high, my credit is fair, but I don't necessarily think this is a rebuilding card with them. That's what they have their secured cards for. Plus it's my understanding that this classic gets periodically reviewed to be automatically upgraded to a higher tiered card with them. That's all this classic is, is just a lower tiered card they offer.
It's "higher" than their secured accounts, but yet not as fancy as their world cards.
Ditto. I cold app'd for the Classic Amex. It's a rebuilder that has the ability to be upgraded to the World Cards. High APR, no BT, no Cash Advance. That's ok, I have Cap1 for BT and I don't plan on carrying balances and avoid cash advance like the plague. It's an in with USAA that I desperately wanted for the long haul.
Cool thing is, if you use USAA checking, payments to the card are lightening fast.
