Re: USBank Application Question

Here is my most recent experience with BoA and WF applications.  It is long, but no need to read through the whole thread, as I updated the first post in the thread with updates.  Read on if interested.

I have an ongoing auto loan with BoA, on a 72-month installment, scheduled to be paid off Jan of next year.  Yet that was not sufficient for them either.  WF was just "slow" at communicating to me what they needed, but even without prior or existing relationship, they were not as intrusive.

I too am annoyed with the 2 wasted EX HPs from BoA and now USBank, but it is what is.  Even if I were "okay" with submitting my tax returns, which I am coompletely NOT okay for a mere credit card, having ZERO guarantee of an approval, not to mention additional delay in UW processing that would totally eliminate the initial needs for this card in the first place, makes this whole ordeal completely not worth my time and effort.  Just as FIs can deny or blacklist people, I can return the same favor.  No more USBank for me.

BoA was even more annoying, having flip flopped on me without notice, and that took less than 1 hour, maybe even 30 minutes.  At least they didn't approve and open the account, only to request the docs afterwards.  Those kinds of practices feel almost predatory; it literally forces people to comply because most people would want to keep the newly-opened account stay opened.  If not, you not only waste a HP, but another new account that shows up as closed immediately afterwards, giving you no benefit and only causing your scores to drop.  How would an account that is closed by the credit grantor without even a month of history look to other creditors that would review your report in the near future?  To take it off, you'd have to wait TEN years!

On your situation, I hope all goes well.  I am sure the request was legitimate, but DO check nonetheless.  I look forward to seeing you post in the Approval subforum soon!

It turns out the request was legitimate and once I submitted photos of my ID and Social Security card it took roughly 48 hours before I got an approval e-mail with an $8K limit.  I was a little annoyed at the fact that the web application flat-out said declined rather than "we need some more information before we can proceed".

Without the perception of a hard "no" I wouldn't have bothered applying for a Discover BT card which I was approved for with a $6K limit so in the end it all worked out.  I also decided to ask for a CLI from CapitalOne (got a $250 bump on a $6K limit card) and Amex (I asked to be bumped to $8K from $6.9K and that was also granted) so with two HPs and a couple clicks on webpages I managed to incread my total credit limits by $15,350 which will cut my utilization down from 65% to 43% and shave right around $600 a month in interest off my expenses once the BTs go through.  Being able to apply that same $600/mo to principal instead of interest will help get my balances down pretty quickly.

It was a pretty big week for progress on my credit rebuild.

I'm kind of dying reading about your experiences with BoA... that just boggles the mind that they would approve the account and then almost immediately cancel it.  that's just nuts.  I had Barclay close my previous Visa after 5 years because i had stayed too close to my limit for too long.  I never had a single late payment for that card but I was over 90% for about a year and literally the same month that i sock drawered it so I could try and get the principal down they canceled it... so i had about $8K in debt on a card that was "closed by credit grantor"... AND they had lowered my limit a few months prior to that so my "high balance" exceeded my credit limit by over $1,000 which had to look bad to anybody looking at it.  It took about 4 years to pay that one down all the way...

The whole credit industry basically IS predatory if you use the credit granted you.  There is no greater crime against people's wallets than 25%-30% interest rates and the people (me specifically but other folks, too, obviously) who rack up credit card debt are the ones who can't afford crazy high interest AND paying down the principal so they just keep bleeding that interest out of you.

It's crazy though... i just went back through some old PDF statements from my oldest active card and i was being charged 29.40% interest in 2010... I'm pretty sure that was a penalty interest rate for missing a payment because that card was at 13.9% for years and it dropped down again after a few months... it started creeping up to 15% and 16% by 2020 and then dropped down to 13.9% again in 2021...  crept up to 14.15% in April 2022 and today it's 18.15%...  I'm hoping once I BT my balances to 0% cards and get my UTIL under 30% (and then down to under 10% and then down to 0%) these interest rates will start going down. My income has improved enough that I don't need credit cards to afford the basic necessities and I've gotten better about when to spend and how to spend so I don't intend to carry balances on them for long enough to have to pay interest anymore, but on principle I hope they actually do go down... time will tell.

I hear you.  With credit cards, the further you are down in debt, the more difficult things get, contributed by the fact that lenders give you much harder time.  I understand that they are in a business of making money; they could easily say that the person with debt or credit issues possess higher risk, thereby either flat out denying any opportunities for loans that such person desperately may need, or throw out terms with extremely high interest rate so that they can collect more interest.  The key is to not to put oneself into such position in the first place.

Barclays... LOL.  I used to have their old "Arrival" card with a toy limit in the past.  In hindsight, I should have never bothered applying with them.  That card product is no longer available in the U.S.  Go figure.  The only reason that product managed to stay around was due to all that advertising they promoted to websites like Nerdwallet, Pointsguy, etc.  Anyway, I ended up SD'ing that useless card, and let them close it due to inactivity.

I've realized that when it comes to credit cards, they are completely optional and none are mandatory to have at any given moment, with a sole exception of BT cards.  I'd say that planning is essential: knowing and planning ahead of time the amount of large expenses to incur that cannot be paid back within a couple of months.  Therefore, one should look for, well in advance before incurring more debt, either a personal loan or a BT card with 0% for anywhere between 12 to 21 months.  By the time the large debt gets reported, not only would that lower the credit score, it also increases DTI and utilization, which would always work against anybody.

Again, congratulations on getting that approval.  Just be careful, though.  Applying for more credit cards purely in the interest of utilization ratio padding may work against you.  It is of utmost priority to reduce the balances down as much as possible.  But I am sure you know that already.

Having lived in some other countries, I have seen how seemless and fast identity verification system is done there, albeit at the expense of having to tie one's cell phone number to the citizen's identification number, the equivalent of SSN.  Waiting 5-7, 14, 30 days for a letter in the snail mail is virtually unheard of and unthinkable there.  Having seen such things, I say we are really patient folks. thanks for the kind words and thoughtful advice.  I wasn't specifically trying to get my utilization percentage down... just trying to get rid of some of my monthly interest overhead... the second card (discover) was only applied for because I was sure I had been declined for this US Bank card, but it works to my advantage because now almost all of my debt will fit on these two cards at 0% for 15 and 18 months and the remaining debt can be BT'd back to the Discover I already had for another 0%/15 months or so... so I'll have two pretty heavily utilized cards at 0% APR, a third that's at about 25% util with 0% APR and then 3 that will be kept as close to 0% utilization as possible... going to keep using them for cash rewards and the like and PIF most months.  The BT cards will be exclusively used for these BTs and no new spending until they are paid off.  I've got about 15 months until my last baddie drops off my report and that should be enough time to get these all paid down or all the way paid off.  2021 hit hard and i still kept everything clean / paid on time, but everything has been getting better since...

I guess I'll be making a call when I have time.... but does anyone have an idea of what to expect or why they would text me?

Are you sure the link in the text is actually US bank? What you are describing is very odd!

I do know CreditOne does take your personal information and sale/share it with 3rd party.
