United Card Recon

I applied for the United Club card almost 2 weeks ago and got the "you'll hear from us soon" message. I gave it 8 Business Days and called the Recon line to inquire. The agent was really nice and did inform me that I had been denied.  He gave me the reasons (a thin credit file and a too young of one). I explained that my personal card was a year old and that I was an AU on one of my husband's cards. I also pointed out that I have made all of my payments on time. I also advised that I wanted to BT to the new card. He advised me that he would forward the info to the recon people and that I should hear from them in about 2 weeks. Is  "two weeks" a good thing? I have a 745 EX score and 750 TU score (who they pulled from) and low DTI.

Re: United Card Recon

Generally thin and young don't appeal to Chase, at least not in most of the threads I've read about it. Also not sure why you'd BT to this new card when there're likely a SUB on the line, perhaps after meeting the required spend? I also don't see how it would be an encouragement for them to open the account for a BT versus getting swipes for purchases.

Good Luck with the recon!

Re: United Card Recon

Thank you. Smiley Happy I was mainly asking about them advising me 1-2 weeks versus the standard denial time frame of 7-10 business days. I wasn't sure if there was a difference.

Re: United Card Recon

2 weeks is pretty standard for further manual review. As mentioned they aren’t fond of thinner profiles but have made exceptions in the past.

If that card card is one that you’ll really benefit from and don’t get approved upon further review, just give it a little more time. An option is to possibly open a chase checking or savings account...as they tend to value that and it has increased people’s approval chances. (Myself included)

Re: United Card Recon

The United Club card has a mininum SL of $15K.  Given Chase' pattern of conservatism in general with applicants who have thin profiles I'd think that the odds of success on recon are not going to be good, barring an unusual circumstance like you being an existing Private Bank client with more than $10 million in assets under their management.

Re: United Card Recon

Despite having a thin credit profile (I don't like credit cards except for this one and only have the personal card I do in order to get it), you'd figure Chase would like a client with an average credit score of 747 and an annual income of $160k, but business is business I suppose.

Out of curiosity, what is the limit on your one card? And what is the utilization? I presume you would BT the balance of this card to the new one? Your profile is young and thin, so I can't imagine the limit is very high. Add in a possible balance on the card, and odds of approval aren't good. I realize your income and scores are high, but lenders like to also see experience and responsible usage.

Re: United Card Recon

I have NFCU Flagship with a CL of $19k as my personal card. It has less than 10% utilization. My husband's card where I am an AU does have  current high utilization due to just paying for private school tuition.

Re: United Card Recon

I called the automated line today and got the "7-10 business days" message. I know what that means, but it's been that message for over 10 business days (I called recon at business day 8) and haven't received a letter or anything yet. Oh well. They must not need customers who are willing and able to pay for their high-end cards. My husband is angry enough to close his chase bank account.

Just understand that NFCU is an outlier for giving astronomical CLs. So, think about it, having only one CC just does not provide any CCC with enough history no matter one's income or scores. They don't know that you're willing and able to pay for their high-end cards because there's no history.

IMHO, just give your credit history time to mature, get your UT under 8.9%, and if DH UT is really high, remove yourself as an AU on his CC unless he's PIF in the next 1-2 months.

Building a great credit history/profile takes time and patience. And you're on the right track. Time is on your side.
