Update: approved. When to apply for Marriott Amex after closing a card

Ok so right now I have four amex cards. I want to close the delta Amex as it was a crappy card and I have no use for it. I have my eye on the Marriott Amex. So my question is, when should I time the closing of the delta card so that I am officially considered a three card holder with amex AND app before the closure hits my report so I go into the app with the highest score possible?

I would call Amex and see if they can make you happy - they may just credit the AF on the Delta or offer a PC to a no fee Delta.

I'm sort of partial to Delta as that's my favorite airline (pre-pandemic)...

If you do app for the Marriott, make sure you get that latest SUB:

@4sallypat , the problem OP would run into is that Amex has instituted a four-revolver maximum for all but the strongest and highest-spending profiles. To get the Marriott card, OP will have to close a card first.

Your situation is a bit complex as you only have a $1K SL on the Delta. Normally I would say to just apply for the Marriott card as an underwriter will sometimes call and offer to approve if you agree to close an existing card, but they can't approve for a Marriott Brilliant with a $1K SL.

I would suggest closing the Delta card and once it shows up in your online account as being in "Cancelled" status go ahead and apply.

Thanks all. Yes, I need to cancel one card to app for the Marriott so I already know I'm cancelling the delta card. I just need to know the right timing between closing that card and Apping for the Marriott.

Ok, but I thought the restriction was four Revolvers. Chargers tend to be not restricted for card count.

^^^ correct and my mistake. I thought I read four revolvers or credit cards, and didn't look at OP's sig. IIRC there is a 10 card limit for charge cards.

That's good to know. Delta was getting chopped no matter what though, but at least I don't need to worry about the number of cards. Thanks all! Delta is already canceled so I'm just waiting for a balance pay off on one more card to app. I'll update when I do.
