Venture Advice

Hi All,

Looking for some advice on applying for Cap One Venture. I will be taking the family to Disney in the next year or two and want to rack up some miles to help cover the travel costs. I am in the process now of getting my last baddie deleted from my CRs (a $51 medical collection) - my stats are below. I am a bit impatient and was wondering if I should apply now or wait until mid may when my util goes down and the collection is deleted.

FICO 8 Scores: TU 688, EX 681, EQ 665

Baddies: 1 Collection (hopefully deleted soon), 1 30 day late from last July on a SL Smiley Frustrated

Util 20% (will report < 5% when next statement cuts on 5/15)

Inquiries: TU 4, EX 5, Eq 4

AAoA: 6 yrs

Current card: Cap One QS. It started as a Platinum w/ a 500 limit in Jul 2014 it has been auto CLI to 6500 and upgraded to a QS without me ever asking.+

I did the prequal but didn't get offered a venture or venture one.

So do I go for it now or wait for mid may? Also - are there better travel cards than the Venture? I like the 40K bonus and the 2x for everything points. Plus I like Cap One and they seem to like me well enough.

Welcome to the forum

First off make no mistake Venture is a glorified marketing promo of Cap1 and it is not a miles card but a cashback card to erase purchases

So my question is are you sure this is the card for you vs a real travel card?

As far as profile:

I don't see anything that wouldn't allow for an approval

It's just a matter of when you want to app

UTL isn't bad could be better but not a show stopper by any means

Before you app think...
Have you done your research of the CC?
Does it fit your spending?
Do you have a plan for the bonus w/o going into debt?
Can you afford the AF?
Do you know the cards benefits? Is it worth the HP?

Re: Venture Advice

Just my two cent, if capital one did not give you pre-qual its kinda risky. Capone prequal is pretty solid as far as i know from experiance. Also alot of other people on this forum mentioned it many times. Again as far as I know if there is no pre-qual capone will hit all three reports so be aware!

Other good travel cards are Chase CSP. some of the citi cards, barclay arrival plus world master card, amex gold premier card,  thats all i can think of right now. May be others can give you better advice.

Good luck.

I like the Venture card but I don't think your scores are high enough yet.

The Arrival card from Barclays is similar in many respects. I think it's a little easier to get.

Re: Venture Advice

Your scores may be on the low side.

I would wait till July when your 30 day late is at least a year old.

Re: Venture Advice

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I will hold out a bit longer and take a look at some other travel cards.

Good move I think bravo

The top travel cards lenders are Chase Amex and Citi

CapOne is going to pull from each bureau regardless of having a prequal or not.  It's just going to happen if you apply with them.  Now, with that being said, I have NEVER gotten anything to show on CapOne's prequal and right now I have (2) VentureOne's, a regular Venture, a QS Visa and a PlayStation Visa.  The key is knowing your overall profile and only then, applying for the card you want.
