So I keep receiving emails from capital one and the occasional mailer to try their pre qualification tool OR to apply for SavorOne, QS, or Platinum cards. I already have 3 cards. But for kicks and giggles I like to see if the tool will bring anything up.
It says we can't offer any cards due to maximum amount of cards or something along that wording. Is the maximum limit no longer 5 cards? (3 prime and 2 sub). Google search says 2 cards maximum from what I can find.
But my big question is, if I close an account. Is there a time limit I need to wait before I get another capital one card? I ask because eventually (really big eventually, probably years) I would be interested in Venture X.
Thanks!

I imagine I would wait at the very least until the pre-approval doesn't decline you for too many cards, this might be until they do their monthly review, maybe longer, perhaps shorter.
I wonder if you already have 3 prime cards, you can't go back and get 2 subprime cards. Not that you would apply for a platinum or a QS secured to test it.
It's definitely not 2 cards maximum, but it is probably 2 subprime card maximum.

Why do you say it's definitely not 2 cards maximum? I've seen several DPs on here corroborating the 2 card max, including this very post. Now, of course there are outliers who have 3+ cards, but most people seem to be capped at 2, whether prime or subprime. Also, cobrands such as BJs or Walmart are excluded.
Things change. Some grandfathered. I have 3. But they are older. Pre-$95 a yr AF. Old days 10g approvals were common. Anyway from 01/23:
"Capital One will allow you to have only two of its personal credit cards open at once. This is a hard rule and cannot be overridden.
This does not apply to Capital One’s co-branded store cards.

I believe that limit might be for their lower tier cards. I have 4 Capital One cards, and had no problem getting the, Venture X ($30k limit as well), just last week. I have a, Quicksilver, SavorOne, VentureOne, and now my recent, Venture X.

Its only speculation. Anything with a "One" on the end is the lower "tier" end. Easier to get than the same card without the "One". Depending on your QS CL. That may put it in a class. The X is the top tier. Cant get any higher. I reported what I found on the subject matter.

I only recently downgraded to those "One" cards, as I only wanted to pay the annual fee of the, Venture X. Venture X, and SavorOne, are now my daily drivers.
Anyhow, I am only pointing out that the information you linked to, is probably inaccurate, and that no one knows for sure. Your, Forbes, link, stated two as the maximum amount, as though it's factual, when I am a perfect example of that not being the case. Scouring through, Reddit, their Credit Cards subreddit specifically, also shows that many people indeed have more than two actual Captital One cards. Not including any store branded Capital One cards. Again, I have 4, my wife has 3 (Quicksilver, Savor w/ AF, Venture w/ $95 AF).
In the end, I just believe we should stop giving the number 2, as the maximum amount of credit cards Capital One issues, until concrete evidence is given.
@jhbLook below. I have more than 2 also. Few years back it was 5. 2 Subprime and 3 Primes.

Which is why all of these articles, and posts, that claim 2 cards max, makes no sense.
Off topic really quick: I see you have a 2021 Explorer ST. I had a 2020 ST, loved the performance (had it tuned), and loved the vehicle overall. In February though, I traded it in for a 2023 BMW X5 M50i, and my goodness what an upgrade. Of course the performance is a huge upgrade, but what shocked me the most was the fit, and finish. So quiet, less plastic interior which helps, so smooth, and so refined. It did cost $45K more than the ST, but would recommend it if looking for an upgrade in the SUV segment.
