So a few days ago I posted asking for advice on what card to add to my portfolio based on what I currently hold and my goals regarding credit and one of the suggestions was checking out what I was pre qualified for at Discover.
5 Minutes later there I am on Discovers pre prequalification website putting in my info, ALAS on the bottom before you press submit it says in beautiful bold font "This will not impact your credit score". After reading the terms and conditions to make sure there isn't a hard pull involved I thought I should give it a shot. Loading....Loading....Loading....Oops were sorry something went wrong, please try again at a later time. Wasn't redirected to another page, didnt see any pre approvals, nothing but an error. Uhhh okay close tab, came back here and did some reading saw some inspirational CLI posts regarding Amex and thought I'd give it a shot. BAM! Increased my Blue ED card from 10400 to 20000 myself online on their page. Called Cap 1 and increased my Neiman Marcus CL to 7K from 3K. All soft pulls mind you, soft pulls. I'm doing all this to build a better portfolio for the CSR soon.
Happy as can be waiting for the new limits to report, check my email here and there then BAM! An email from MyFico, a balance change has been detected, I open the app and my Experian score went up by 5 points. CLIs still not reported no biggie (not that I expected it this early). This morning I wake up and check my emails and everythings still blurry but I see an email from myfico BOOYAH! Yeah right.
Alert - A new inquiry was added to your Experian credit report and I dropped 5 points. Lol bish wuh? First thing that went though my mind is some fraud bs. I open the MyFico app and guess who...Discover...So now I am scratching my head thinking I made sure there wasnt any hard pulls involved before doing the prequal what is going on? Call Discover and first they mention that I should not have received a hard inquiry, then they mention that there's a PENDING credit application??? I insist I wasnt even able to find out if I prequalify, nor was I redirected anywhere, nor did I fill anything else out. Just an error and I closed the page. Then they say that oh there isn't an application, that inquiry you're seeing isn't a hard pull at all its a soft pull. I insist I know the difference between a soft pull and hard pull, one of the latter would not drop my credit score nor show up on my credit monitoring apps. Then they say sorry sir were not sure why you are assuming the inquiry is a hard inquiry we dont see any hard pulls in our system matching your name and social. Lol. Offered to launch an investigation if I am still willing to pursue this matter and heck yeah launch that ish.
Contacted Experian and they confirmed that indeed HARD PULL was done by Discover. Call back Discover and explained the whole situation once more and informed them that Experian confirmed it was a hard pull, after adding a few other supervisors to my call they said they would expedite the investigation and call me back today or Monday.
TLDR if you don't want to. Discover Prequal gave me hard inquiry, be careful when checking to see if you prequalify with them.
Offhand, it sounds to me like something went wonky on Discover's end while you were checking for prequal offers and something got scrambled to make their computers think you were actually applying for a card, and did the hard pull. Hope you get it worked out!
I'd think writing to Discover about the situation should work better than calling them. Along with the letter you can attach part of your credit report showing the inquiry listed as an inquiry "that may impact your credit score" or "shared with others" or so. Not just you may have better chance getting resopnded by someone who is more knowledgeable, but also that you have proof of communication you can show if you submit a complaint.

Sounds like a glitch happened to you. You should be able to get it taken off with an explanation to Discover. I wouldn’t worry too much. Just takes a little time to be fixed.
Appreciate your responses!
I got the call back from Discover confirming something indeed went wrong on their end and thanks to my sacrifice they caught the issue causing it. They confirmed the hard pull should not have happened and they are going to work on getting that resloved. Will see the inquiry off my credit report in 90 days or so.
Was dissapointed when it happened but also very pleased now with the customer service I received from Discover's end and I dont even hold a card by them.
Keep us posted and from what you said I’m sure it’ll be taken off following the investigation. There were cases like this about a month back after disco updated the pre app tool. What troubles me is they pulled experian bc I’m positive they pull equifax for pre apps.
I'm glad that Discover is working to correct the issue for you.
