I am curious if any banks offer an alternative card if you aren't approved for the first choice card?
I have received offers of pre-selected from Citi and Chase for particular cards. I am wondering, if I'm pre-selected for a double cash, but apply for a slate; would it refer me to the double cash if I get denied for the Slate?

No, banks don't offer alternatives when denied for a card. Also, the double cash and slate are offered by 2 different banks. Double Cash is offered by Citi and Slate is offered by Chase.
Applying for a credit card does not work like that. So scratch this thought process

I think for both that if you apply for the one offered they won't offer you something different, however you might still be able to apply for the card you do want. If not wait a bit and then try for the one you want.
Discover might offer you different terms than you applied for or their secured card.
US Bank might approve you for a different card than what you applied for, they state that in the application process and are known for doing that.
Comenity also might give you a store card instead of the Visa/MC you applied for.
Generally speaking though most major banks won't offer you you a product that is substantially different from what you applied for.
OP- if you are wondering what banks are friendly upon recon for a card denial, Chase has been known to be nice on recons. I have no experience with Citi recons. But Barclays and BOA are also friendly recon banks.
Also im not sure if op is meaning something else.
Like getting denied for something and getting something else
Example. Apply for best buy mastercard. Get approved for store card.
Or pay pal mastercard. Get smart connect instead.
Same goes with walmart and sams club.
Many of the retail cards do this. in store and online. So in that aspect yes. But say if you apply for amex plat will they give you the green? no way.
