What is "too many requests"?

Back in May, I applied for Chase Sapphire Signature and Citi Diamond Preferred.

Both were denied for "too many requests for new credit" and "too many recent credit inquiries" and both pulled EX.

The thing is, I had opened 2 new CC accounts and one Auto loan in previous 6 months and they almost all exclusively pulled EX. (Most of them in February.)

When I was applying for the auto loan, the car dealership got me to sign a form that allowed them to shop around among many financing institutions in order to try to get me the best deal (stupid of me) That Auto loand app resulted in 5 new HP with Experian and  only two of them are reporting as Auto Financing angencies.

All in all, after these 3 applications I ended up with a total of 12 hard inquires on my EX, but only 5 on TU and 4 on EQ.

9 of the 12 HP were within the last 6 months, and this is of course what resulted  in the denials back in May.

My questions are, how many inquiries are considered "too many inquiries"?

And how long time would need to go until most CC issuers would consider the inquiries not "too recent"?

It is now 6 months since that HP spree. Would that be considered long enough time if I want to reapply for the Chase Sapphire?

Re: What is "too many requests"?

There could be a few things going on. I'm not sure if you know about Chase's 5/24 rule. If you've opened 5 or more accounts in the last 24 months, it's an auto decline for their legacy cards.

As for too many inquiries, this is in proportion to your profile usually rather than a set amount. Thick aged files can take more of a beating than a younger thin file in the inquiry dept.

Are you using their prequal? If you're not subject to 5/24, that might be a good place to start.

Re: What is "too many requests"?

Thanks,

I have 3 opened CCs in the last 24 months and I am aware of their 5/24 rule. I also have one PLOC and and Auto Loan opened in this period but I am not sure how these counts towards the 5/24.

I have 6 CC in total ($29k CL Total) and AAoA is 2.2 years, so I guess that has quite an impact on their decision as well.

I tried their prequal tool but it gave me no results.
