I have 3 American Express cards -- an Everyday, a BCE, and a Gold card.
Last October I had a brief bad period where I was late on my AMEX payment when I was carrying a balance (not carrying anything with them right now) and they sent me a warning that they'd report a late payment to the credit bureaus, but I paid my balance before they did that. Unfortunately, as soon as I paid my balance they cut my credit line, which clearly means they were NOT happy with me. Now I have a measly $1,400 credit line on my BCE and $1000 on my EveryDay.
Since then I've continued to use my cards, mainly the Gold, but I've never been able to get any increase in my credit lines. I understand I guess but I'm wondering how long it might take to get a CLI again? I hope I'm not in the doghouse forever.
Also I'm assuming there's no way in hell they'll approve me for the Platinum? I have no prequals listed.
Few good news for you.
- If you already have the GOLD Card, after 12 months you can upgrade to the Platinum ( they will be more than happy to since they will charge you $550 and the RISK is the same to them , TRUST ME ) No point in having a Platinum and Gold.
- CLI, If you have NOT requested a CLI at all, I suggest to wait 3 months from the TIME your CL was decreased, since it will not hurt your credit. If it gets declined wait 92 days and do it AGAIN, as again it does not hurt your credit. After 6 months you will most likely get a CLI of 50% of your current limit, also I would CLI for the $1400 limit card.
Lastly, why do you want a Platinum card ? I downgraded mine this year to the Gold and also request for the ROSE GOLD METAL CARD ( they have the Gold Metal also )

A CLI or denial will reset the clock for all cards, i.e. only one card can be increased at a time.

I don't have either, but carrying both is easily justifiable at a certain level of spend. They earn bonus points in different spending categories (grocery and restaurants vs hotel and airfare), and for heavy travelers the Platinum perks (Uber credit, airline credit, lounge access, Global Entry credit) are highly valuable.
