Which Citi card to apply for?

Re: Which Citi card to apply for?

Citi is a tough nut to crack.....it took me several YEARS to get in with Citi.  I started with the Simplicity, now have the Double Cash and a Cash Rewards that morphed from a Diamond card that was discontinued.  All limits are at least decent, over 10K, but below many of my cards  that are 25k and above.  Now I get something almost every day offering Balance Transfers of their somewhat new Flex Loans.

You just have to be persistent, for me their rewards are OK.  The Double Cash card often lags in posting, there are no rewards with Simplicity, and Cash rewards are OK.   Their balance transfers are often short term also.   They have excellent customer service though and I just happen to like Citi.  I think having an account with them looks good on your report.....this is just my opinion though.  Having major lenders makes you look solid I think.

I would go for the Simplicity it you are just trying to get in

Well for what it's worth, I just got the Rewards+, and it definitely is the most useful/rewarding of those three. However, the fact that Citi started you so low and refuses to increase your limit makes me wonder if there's something that Citi doesn't like in your profile. No shame in that--some people just can't seem to crack certain lenders.

Have you looked into any other lenders?

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Well thus far, I think they were not liking the 4 derogatory accounts that all dropped off between Sept 2019 & yesterday Smiley Happy

Since I got the card in 2017, my situation has only improved with increased income & generally 3% utilization. Paid in full every month. But yeah, I get how persnickety different card isssuers can be.

I am also looking at Chase Freedom Unlimited. But, honestly, since I have no inquiries, don't plan to get a loan & expect my credit utilization to only go up for the next several months, I was thinking of applying for BOTH a Citi 0% *and* a Chase 0%.

Bad idea?

I would wait until the FICO Bankcard 8 score on the site updates, and then -- if you have the soft pull language -- try for the soft pull CLI.

After that, go for the Chase Freedom Unlimited if you feel you still would like to have it.

Well I'd value having a 0% Citi card more than I'd value having a higher credit limit on my ridiculously high APR current Citi card since I probably will carry a balance at some point in the coming months. The 0% card would allow me to move some of my bigger recurring expenses to it. Is there a reason that you mention the Citi CLI versus getting a new 0% Citi?

Also your portfolio of cards in your email footer is crazy impressive! When you say 568,500 reporting, what does that mean?

No there's no reason. I'd still go for the CLI first, before applying for the new card. If a 0% promo on a Citi card looks good to you then go for it.

But if a CLI on that card isn't meaningful to you, then forget about it.

It means which report to personal credit. Most of my business cards do not report to personal credit, the exception being the TD Bank business card.

Yes except that my TD Bank business card does report to personal credit (had I known, I never would have gotten it).

$585K of personal credit?!

560k personal + 25k on a TD business card which does, unfortunately, report to personal credit.

I'm not trying to be nosy, so please don't answer this if you feel like it's none of my beeswax. But reading your individual responses to different comments, I'm still a little confused. You have $560K of personal credit cards & one $25K business credit card that reports to personal credit?

I understand why you'd want to keep business credit separate from personal credit & I understand why a business owner would want access to that much credit. But as someone with < $30K in personal credits cards, I'm trying to understand why someone would need/want $560K in personal credit. My parents were raised with no running water in their homes & worked hard to get us *up* to lower middle-class. I'm middle class but see that I probably only have the mentality one step beyond my parents. So I'm looking to be enlightened about how I'm thinking about & using money versus how you're thinking about & using money because it's a lot easier to grow to higher levels if you have an understanding of what that next level looks like and the mindset of the people who are there.

Again no need to answer if this is none of my business!
