Which card should i apply for?

Hi,

I have about 6500 in credit card debt with no baddies. About 55% utilization. I am thinking about applying for a card to transfer my balance over @ 0%. Scores are 660,663,666. What do you guys recommend?

The problems that you are going to run into is that the current high utilization is going to make it difficult to get an approval for a balance transfer card with a sufficient limit to cover your needs.  Having said that, check out the CapOne preapprovals and see if you prequalify for the QuickSilver

Have you requested a CLI with the current card? Who is it with? What is the current APR? Have you contacted them to see if they would lower your APR (cap1 does this frequently) in the mean time?(Balance transfers take 7 days to a month!)  Request CLI on all other cards.

What other cards do you have?  Your scores are good enough for Amex ...possibly. See if they prequal you for 0 for 15months. Doubt they would give you a limit higher than 5k.

you could split it between two new cards?

I would say 6500 is not quite enough for a consolidation loan. What do you fellow myficoers think?

Worst case scenario, your credit takes a hit for opening a new account, the new limit will lower your total UTIL, so may see it go up, but when you do the BT it will swing back a bit, but overall you could be higher than lower with scores. Transfer it all to the new card, pay it down fast, and you may be surprised at the results.

Your inquiries are high now, so you could just be forced to app for cap1. Only the qs, qs1, venture1, and prestige will offer 0% interest. Leave capital one as a last resort because they wont care about adding 1 or 2 more inquiries...Venture1 will have the higher limit most likely so do that first.

Re: Which card should i apply for?

I plan on paying $1000/month on my cards to pay them down ASAP. Do you think it is better to wait a month or two to pay them down and then apply for the balance transfer cards?

If you are able to pay 1k a month, you will be paid up in 6 months roughly. I wouldnt even bother with getting another card right now.  You will be saving at most a few hundred dollars in interest. Then you end up with a card with a higher APR after promo.  Especially the inquiries.

You will look great in a few months. My advice would be to wait unless you absolutely need the interest savings. Once your util is down you wont even need to consider a BT anyway, your scores will be higher and you will be able to get better cards.  These cards will get you more cash back and rewards and have a better APR.

Your signature is outdated I think. What are your current inquiries?

Pay it down since it sounds like you have the ability to within a few months time and wait on getting another card. It's much easier to get additional credit when utilization is low. Even if you do qualify for a new card now, the terms are usually much better when you apply with low overall utilization.

Hmm. I am trying to figure out what is the cause for your scores to be lower than 700.

If you really only have 2 inquiries, and you are an avid couponer trying to do anything to save money, then in 3 months apply. But you would be way better long down the road just waiting till its all paid off and evaluating your credit needs then.

Re: Which card should i apply for?

I am assuming it is due to utlilization. I check the score simulator on myfico and it says my score would be in the 750s once everything is paid off.

I guess that is possible. Wow 100 point increase just in 6 months. I hope that is the case. You will be golden.
