No credit card required
Browse credit cards from a variety of issuers to see if there's a better card for you.
Should be easier for him to get a few cards with no credit compared to bad credit. OP shouldn't have a problem getting the qs1 and platinum from cap1. Unless he have something on his file that he isn't aware of. Can be cell phone bill or medical collection
Another method people forget about is what are known as share secured loans from a credit union. You need to have an account at a credit union, or a bank that makes loans against deposits, held as security. Right after my BK I went into my credit union and told them I wanted to deposit my paycheck into a security account and borrow the same amount against it. They were happy to accomodate me. After a few months I had a $2000 installment loan reporting on my CR. I paid that as agree for a year, before paying it off. They then issued me a Visa card, unsecured with a $2k SL
OP, if you're still around, you might want to check out this thread RE: Capital One Builder Program. It's a card, very low limit to start ($100), but graduates to $500 after 5 on time payments.
Yep good start. I would also re-enforce the secured credit card thing
too via a few great providers here. You need to show you can handle
credit. Many of us have damaged our credit or had no history so the
secured card was the way to go.
I know that many people here also bash cards like the one from credit one
( not capital one! ) but that seems to be easier to get. If you use the
credit one card, just make sure you pay right away because there is
like no grace period. I find it takes 2 days for it to post, so if you
do charge, make sure you have the money to pay it off right off. I have
used this card and paid very little interest on the card.
SO what I would do, get secured first, do use it for a bit, then graduate
maybe to like a credit one.... get a file going and then try a for a
better card after 6 months to a year.
No credit is bad credit. Like many said, you have to start somewhere, and basically there are two ways.
One, piggyback on other people's credit to get in: Get a cosigner and get an autoloan or some other loan, or get yourself added as an AU to a few credit cards with good history and util.
Two, overcome credit issue by hard money guarantee, i.e. get a secured loan or credit card. There is even secured cards that earn rewards like U.S. Bank Skypass secured, which earns Korean Air miles that can be useful for overseas trip.
Alternatively, store credit cards tend to accept people with zero credit. I think Macy's are relatively easy.
Another factor when it comes to students is the issue of income. If you are a full time student with no/low income and no credit, that is like a double whammy of trouble. You have to have income or assets that can be used to pay back. If you haven't been successful with even cards targeted to students, this may have to do with it.
Just a regular observation: OP is on page 1, on 3 December, then.... nevermore.
Meanwhile the regulars at myFICO carry on the conversation, re-discussing the things we all know, and solving the issues like good soldiers
Gotta luv a good, consistent conversation.
Best of luck, OP, wherever you went...
@Anonymous wrote:Hello,
I am a 23 yr old college student trying to apply for my first credit card.I can not get anyone to accept me because of my lack of credit history. Ive tried Chase Freedom, Discover Student, tried at my own bank and they said no. I have no student loans, car loans or anything, always just spent what I had, lived within my means. Ive tried mulitiple times calling recon departments and they always come back saying either we dont approve first timers or no becasue of a lack of credit history. What am I missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I didn't read all of your reponses, but getting a capital one secured card will be your best bet. That is what I did, and capital one secured doesn't report as a secured card.
