Hi everyone
I have a Chase Sapphire Preferred, and applied for a CLI of $800 to bring the limit to $10k. I did this as I might upgrade to the CSR in the future, and since the minimum credit limit to upgrade is $10k I figured I might as well do it now, so that I'd know the upgrade would go through later without an additional credit check. My request was denied with the reason 'recently received a credit limit increase' (I received an auto CLI from $5k to $9.2k in January.) I haven't had any recent inquiries and my FICO scores range from 740-760 with no late payments/derogs. The card is just over a year old.
Is it worth appealing, or would it be better to wait until 6 months have passed since the auto CLI? I thought since it was an auto CLI and I didn't specifically request it, it'd be fine to do a manual request, but I guess not. Thanks in advance!

This is my best guess as to why your request was denied. Haven't read any datapoints to show how often one can request an increase with Chase but that seems to go with the majority of the other banks for frequency such as AMEX, Capital One and Citi. Like you, though, I'm surprised an auto CLI counts. I would send a SM to them to ask for clarification on this rule to be sure
I think it is why I was denied yeah, the only reason listed on my denial letter was 'Your credit line was recently increased'.

Sorry for your CLI denial![]()
The DP's are valuable for others.
Thanks for taking one for the team ![]()
Good luck for the upcoming CSR upgrade. We are all rooting for you.
Thanks! I might ask to have it manually reviewed since Chase has already done an HP. If I do, I'll let you know how it goes! I'm not sure it'll be worth poking the bear though... maybe best to wait until it's been 6 months since the auto-CLI.
Since I already wasted a hard pull, I thought I've got nothing to lose so I requested a manual review of my request via SM. I explained I wouldn't have done it so close to my auto CLI had I known that would be counted when manually requesting an increase, and that I'd like the increase so that when I upgrade to CSR in the future once travel opens up, I'll be able to upgrade immediately without having to request a CLI at the same time. I'll let you know the result!
@cupofcoffee - Did your CL change as a result of the manual review?

They replied to my request saying it had been 'forwarded to the appropriate department for review' and that I'd hear back within seven business days. I haven't heard back yet, but I'll let you know when I do!
Update: approved for an $800 increase to $10k! I got a voicemail from Lending Services, and called back. I explained to the agent I'm wanting to upgrade to Sapphire Reserve in the future once travel opens up, and would like to get to the minimum credit line needed, so that I could upgrade without another credit pull. He was understanding and said he'd have to pull my credit, as, since my request was initially auto-declined, no pull was made at the time. I was surprised as I thought it was HP whenever you request a CLI no matter what! I confirmed it was fine, then agent came back saying he couldn't pull Transunion. I have an ITIN instead of an SSN, but I've requested my credit file from transunion before and it's reporting fine, so I suppose it was a system issue. This was actually what saved me! As I assumed they had already pulled my credit when I first requested the CLI and recon would base their decision on that, I applied for the Apple Card a few days ago in order to finance an apple purchase in the future, and Apple Card HPs transunion if you accept, which I did (only a $900 limit, but apparently you can SP request a CLI every 90 or so days). The agent then asked if they could pull EQ or EX and I said that was fine. He then came back and confirmed my source of income. Another brief hold and he congratulated me on my $800 CLI! Hope these data points are helpful!
