Just no.. You can't make five $100 payments, then a $2500 payment and suddenly have a history of paying $500 a month. You paid $100 each of those months. Still, if your min. due was $25, I would think paying 4x that certainly qualifies for a CLI. Sometimes they pick one reason but they actually have several. Good luck with it, at least it sounds like you'll have a CLI before too long.

hmm ok, it was actually 3 payments of 100, then 500, then 2016. Isn't an average a sum/period? Guess I didnt pay enough attention to math class lol. How do you come to the monthly average payment then?

Actually i don't think their math works that way. If you would have made $100 payments a few times thru out the statement period, then maybe you would be right, but  If you owe $3K on a card and you make $100 payments for 3 months, you are not really paying much towards the debt. I have a barclay Apple rewards card with only $2K limit. Got the card mid october 5th, and ran almost $13K by christmas all paid off in full. Now it's been 7 months, almost and i was really expecting an auto cliby now (maybe at 6 month), but did not happen. How much was your statement balance when you made those $100 payments?

The $100 per month payments were made the first 3 months of the account opening, so the balance was like $500 max before I had made the 3rd $100 payment, so $200 balance after the 3rd $100 payment. Think the balance was like $100, then $200, then $500 total the first 3 months. I dont have access to my account currently so going off memory, but it was close to those numbers. After I saw the monthly payments too low message, I charged up to $1k on the card, then made a $500 payment, bringing the balance to $500. Got the same message the next month so I charged up to $2k or so & paid the full balance in one month. Still the same message after that.

I'm not worried about it anymore. I've currently sock-drawered that card, and will just combine it with my other QS to make a $10k QS. I've got much higher limit cards whose companies don't give me these nonsense reasons to not give a CLI, and give me CLI's for using their cards. I'll give my money to those other companies instead. Re: Your average monthly payment has been too low

This is weird. I usually pay at least $5 more than the min now. I have gotten descent credit increases. When I was paying huge payments, I wasn't really getting big increases if at all. I was told by a banker many years ago to pay at least $5 more a month and the increases will come. I guess for me it's true.

Re: Your average monthly payment has been too low

Omg!! I recently had the same thing on my QS. It was one month after the 0% ended and I paid $2k on a $3500 balance. I considered that to be a decent monthly payment and was shocked at that reason for denial. When it was 0% of course I paid just the minimum. I was able to get them to reset the balance date, actually they suggested it, to zero so that I wouldn't have to pay interest on the remaining balance for the 6 interest free 6 months.
With C1 it is all about the phone agent. I can always tell within 2 seconds whether I am dealing with a more customer friendly one and if not, I pretend I went into a tunnel and call back for someone else. This saves you from spending an hour chasing your deal with an agent who has no interest in helping.

Re: Your average monthly payment has been too low

Just checked my QS Visa again for a CLI. The website said my QS was OK'd for a CLI!! ... for a whole $400 more. At this point I feel like I'm getting trolled by them. Smiley Sad I declined it. Not taking a $400 increase on this card for a 6 month period after spending 1000's on it already after just a couple months. Right now my NFCU card is getting love as well as my Amex & Chases.

Looking for advice on how to overcome this CLI denial reason.

@quick history... Got the QS Visa 5 months ago(will be 5 months in 2 days, but close enough to say) with a SL of $3k. The first 3 months I charged about 400-500 & paid 100 per month while the minimum payment was 25. After 3rd statement I did a quick CLI attempt to see what it would say, figuring I'd get the "too soon" message. I got the "Your average monthly payment has been too low" messge instead. I read page 3 of the denial letter and it said "Generally if you make more than your minimum monthly payment on time for 3 months you can reapply for a credit line increase". I've never missed a payment, and the minimum I've ever payed was 100 for the first 3 months @ 4x the minimum due. Anyways, after that I decided to pay more...alot more. The next month I paid 500 with a minimum due of 25, and after that I paid 2000+ in 1 month, which paid the card off.

So today I try for another CLI attempt, and get the same exact denial reason. I jumped on chat due to it being after hours, and rep wasnt any help to be honest. My average monthly payment to date is 563 per month, after 5 months, unless I totally failed my math here? (100+100+100+500+2016)/5 = 563 average? Or do they do it differently somehow? My highest balance was the 2016 out of a 3k limit, which I had that balance less than a month.

The chat rep said I would need to make these same average payments(563 per month) for another 6 months before I can get my first CLI on this $3k QS Visa?? This is on top of the already 5 statements I'll have in 2 days from now. That seems rather excessive imho - Having to make 11+ payments of $563 average monthly payments on a $3k card?. My other QS card I never had to make such payments to get CLI's...it's only at 6.5k, but it just seems like I'm having to jump thru some real hoops here for my first CLI on this card.

I don't want to come across as expecting to be owed anything(maybie I have already), but this denial reason has me stumped here, and the rep stating I need to make 11+ statements worth of 563 average per month payments seems a bit more than what I'm used to from Cap1(or any other CCC to be honest).

Not sure where to go from here with this card. My other QS MC is over double this one's limit & I got that within 4-5 months of opening that card if I remember correctly. Unfortunately I can't combine these since one is a MC and the other a Visa. The Visa QS seems way harder to get a CLI on.

Anyways, anyone have a similar experience & can tell me how to beat this other than the obvious which is to pay an average of 600 per month for the next 6 months to hopefully get a CLI?

There isn't a real way to beat it with Capital One. They go by the computer generated decision which sometimes can appear to make little sense. In this case, it sounds like you aren't running up high enough balances (and then paying them off) to justify a CLI in Capital One's mind. I wouldn't inflate your spending just for a CLI, though.

Capital One can be hard to figure out because like I said they're very computer based with little CSR intervention being possible. Your only recourse when denied for a CLI is to try again later.  You can go the EO route, but the card is still relatively new, so you may not get anywhere even with a manual review.

My advice is to just keep doing what you are doing and try again at the 6 or 7 month mark. Things with Capital One seem to be based on 6 month intervals for the most part.

Re: Your average monthly payment has been too low

I've used this card far more than my other 2 cards from Cap1. In fact I've used it more than the other 2 combined. This card is actually my lowest CL with Cap1, so they must have massively updated how much they want me to run thru this lower line card. I've spent near 2x the balance of my other 2 cards combined.

Somehow I doubt waiting 2 weeks is going to make a difference in the CLI on this card, but I'll play along.

Re: Your average monthly payment has been too low

That's exactly what they offered me a few months ago; a $400 increase. I declined it, and then I tried again in about 2 weeks and the offer "magically" increased to $2,000... with no change in my activity. They're a little bit odd--but they were the only ones who gave me a chance in the beginning of my rebuilding journey, so they'll always have a special place in my heart, LOL.

p.s. 6 months seems to be a magic number for Cap1. Wouldn't be surprised if you hit the button at the 6 month mark and get a CLI.

I would think so too. Makes sense to me!  But I had a very similar situation...had to carry a balance for awhile and was at 90% util, at least 6 months of payments slightly over the minimum and sometimes just the minimum, then paid large payment and brought util to about 15% (on Platinum with a $3050 CL). Hit the love button immediately after my big payment posted and got the 3-months of payments more than minimum denial. Tried again about two weeks after the denial (what can I say? I'm stubborn) and bam...$1000 CLI.

Who knows with Cap1 sometimes? I know we all have different profiles, so there's no telling...all I can say is that based on my experience the 3 month rule is definitely not set in stone. Maybe give it a few weeks without new charges (I didn't use the card in those two weeks) after paying down so they don't get spooked? That worked for me.

Re: Your average monthly payment has been too low

Strangely, they stopped using the "average payment too low" message right after my 0% promo period expired. Now they're offering me a generous $400 cli. Giving it a couple more months of checking to see if if changes lol.

I run 2700-2900 and pif and all they are offering me is 250 increase. I hope you get a higher offer.  I hope I do as well.
