So, on a whim, I applied.  Got a call this morning to verify my identity and was told I would get an email with further details.

APPROVED! $10K SL 

I haven't had an AMEX since my green card in 1984!

I did get behind on the green card, but paid it off.  A couple of years later, I was invited to reapply, but it came in my old last name and I just never did it.

Current FICO 8s: EQ 722, EX 692, TU 728  1 inquiry, 10 months old.

congrats! don't forget you can be eligible for the infmaous 3xcli after 61 days or two statements cut! and then you can ask for and possibly be approved for another 3xcli after 6 statements or 181 days of having the account though I personally wouldn't ask for more than a $30k cl.
