Go For It or Wait For It? Update: SPG Approved

I haven't been looking for anything to app for lately, as I have plenty of new accounts and I don't really have anything that I've wanted EXCEPT the SPG from Amex. I haven't apped for it yet because I was hoping to let things age a bit. However, I received an email today from SPG saying that I could use their link to get 30k Starpoints. The main reason that I'm leaning towards applying is because of the pending changes to the rewards structure, I'd like to get the SPG with a decent offer, while the points will still transfer at a 3x rate to Marriott rewards (not sure if this will change or not?). The main reason that I don't want to apply is that I have a pile (13) of new accounts in the past 12 months, which is from me redoing my portfolio. I have 3 cards with Amex - Platinum w/ $35k POT, BCE @ $6k, and EDP @ $2.3k. I can request 3X again in February (I actually plan to transfer my limit from the BCE to EDP or SPG if I go for it, and when it's eligible). I also have the Ritz card from Chase @ $14.5k. I mainly stay at Marriott properties, and will be staying at a few Ritz locations this year as well. My Experian is currently at 704 according to MyFico and Amex's most recent SP from 2 days ago when my most recent statement closed. AAoA is 2 years.

So, should I go for it? Should I let everything age and see what new products come out for SPG and Marriott?

(Sorry if this is all over the place. I'm watching football and writing reports for work.)

Re: Go For It or Wait For It?

I have found that often times waiting on the sidelines too long makes you miss out. There have been things that I wanted but decided to wait and by the time I was ready they were gone. You know the old sayins; life's short; you only live once etc.

If you are waiting because you think you may be declined, then that is a legitmate reason for waiting...otherwise you may want to jump on this before its gone.

CO_NATIVE, I'm not worried about a denial. Amex is showing me pre-approved for two revolvers and one charge at the moment with set APRs (obviously no APR on the charge). I think I'm more worried about adding ANOTHER account to my long lists of new accounts. My last hard-pull was in September, and my last new account (the Ritz) is dated as October.

With a couple post concerning AA and someone getting the Ritz, id be more concerned with how Chase might react to a new account then just adding another cardSmiley Wink

@Anonymous, I should have been more specific. That's one of my worries with adding another card, is AA on other accounts... Primarily Chase.

Hmmmm..have you considered the business version instead? The sign up bonus is a little less (25K) and you have to spend $2K more ($5K total) to get it...but business cards do not report to the bureaus and many have stated that lately new Amex approvals-even business-are SP as long as you've had a recent Amex AR. Anybody can apply for a business card as a sole proprietor (Google this; there are many youtube videos about this and travel websites that discuss this). I am considering this myself just to test it out. Yeah, I'm bored LOL.

Re: Go For It or Wait For It?

Chase aside, the SPG is my favorite card because I use it as a Marriott card for high non-category earnings combined with my Amex Platinum and Chase Freedom/CSP.  The current Chase Marriott/Ritz cards can't beat those for earning Marriott points.

The rewards programs will remain as-is through the end of 2018.  Amex will be introducing a new super premium consumer Marriott card and business Marriott cards at some point next year, and Chase will be handling the low/mid-level consumer cards.  Any future signup bonus would be very unlikely to be substantially more than the 90,000 Marriott points you'd get now.

Re: Go For It or Wait For It?

They must have sent out a big email campaign today.  I got one, too, but it was for the 25K offer. Smiley Sad

The 30K offer on the SPG personal card is pretty easy to get through incognito.  I've seen it nearly every time I've looked over the last several months.

I saw it a couple times, but I can't get it to come back! I keep seeing elevated SUBs for everything else, except what I want lol

Re: Go For It or Wait For It?

If the only reason you want the card is for the sign-up bonus, you shouldn't get the card. If, however, you have wanted the card for a while because of the benefits/rewards it confers, then unless you have a solid reason not to apply, go for it.

It seems like your strategy is a means to accelerate point accrual. By that logic, do you want to sit on the sidelines earning 0 additional points per dollar on the chance that you could be earning 9 points per dollar a year from now, or just jump in and start earning 6 points per dollar today?
