Hello. I have been on and off reading a little here for several years. My wife and I have had bad credit for almost 20 years. Could never seem to get ahead. Though it was my wife's fault for making late payments, it was as much mine for not following up and making them myself. Tons of late payments. Most actually. We haven't had a credit card for almost the entirety of the last 20 years.
Well about 18 months ago I got a lease with a co-signer. Then 6 months ago I got a secured cc through my local credit union.
After reading on here last night I decided to go check the Discover and Amex pre-approval sites. Both of them told me "congratulations" and my name with 2 choices. So i came back this morning here to ask some questions in the application forum. Jnbmom suggested I go to Discover scorecard site to check Fico. I couldn't believe it said 720. Based on others advise I decided to try Discover first and approved for $10k! but at 24.74%. I'm hoping it'll go down in the future.
After a little contemplating I decided to try for the Amex Premier Rewards Gold. And got approved for that as well! I can't believe it still.
I am so grateful to this community for selflessly giving such wonderful advice and aiding those of us who have let our ownselves down in the past to learn and grow from. As I said in my other thread, today I actually feel like an adult again. No longer do I have to be ashamed when out with friends and can't pull out a cc with a higher limit and volunteer to pay. I would always carry cash to avoid those situations.
And hopefully now when the time comes for my next auto loan, I won't need a co-signor.
Thank you all very much!
Congratulations on the approvals for your Discover and Amex PRG cards.
To avoid the risk of late payments, sign in to your online accounts (you'll probably have to wait for the cards to arrive to set up your accounts), go to the Payments tab, and set up auto-payments for the minimum amount. That way, if you ever forget to pay at least the minimum payments will be on time.
Nicely done, hwga. Two fine cards. Congratulations! to you and Mrs. hwga.
Thank you all.
Quick question, Amex let me open an online account upon approval and it said member since 1993. That was when I got my original card that I ended up defaulting on and they closed. Is there any chance they report this card as 1993? I really doubt it. Most likely they are saying I got an account with them that long ago and not this specific card. But it would be great. I feel like I'm just getting greedy now.

Unfortunately no, that is from their internal records but they will not report from that date. It would be nice though, but they will report the date you opened your new card.
Congrats as well on the rebuild and successful approval, that's a good SL from Discover . I believe Amex does not back date anymore on the credit report, and the new card will most likely show as opened 8/18.
I think anyone would be ecstactic to land a new Discover and Amex!

The card you will recieve will show the "Member Since" date as 1993. However, your account history will not be backdated. Amex stopped backdating credit histories reported to the credit bureaus about 3 years ago.
If your card doesn't show the old "Member Since" date you can call and they will issue a corrected card.
