Quad Approval Spree! (with Mixed Feelings) - Bank of America, CITI Diamond, Apple Card with 757-784

A while back in a post here, I wanted to pave the pathway to getting an Amex, X1 and AlliantCU card. Fast foward to the past 4-6 days and here are the results.

Being a good boy, I've been holding out to apply for any new cards until after my car arrived and my loan with that was complete. Was approved through Hyundai Motor Finance at Tier 1 rates to my surprise (despite them using the lowest score I had with Experian at 742 AutoFICO8). That was a huge deal for me and couldn't be happier with how it all turned out. With that done, I decided to go on the much awaited card spree, which may have turned out to be a mistake so soon after the car? (feeling rather confident with my scores, surprise surprise) but didn't end up with the results I was expecting or hoping for. Overall am happy to have acquired some nice 0% APR months ahead regardless but still... kind of discouraging.

Experian: 757

Equifax: 768

Transunion: 784

Credit Utilization: 12%

Available Credit: $21k+

First thing first was to proceed with American Express, it's been one I've been after to add to the list but absolutely zero love. Problem being: I used Affirm in the past and both Experian and Amex seems to have a zero tolerance for "consumer finance" accounts despite my 12-year credit history being in perfect standing order with a nice mixed bag of accounts across the board from home, personal loan, and handful of credit cards for the majority.

Applied for American Express, did not even pre-qualify. Needless to say I was kind of gutted because I thought I had it in the bag but no love.

NEXT....

So Bank of America was on my list because of their 0% APR intro offer and most others I've seen generally start with a generous $10k+, thought for sure it was going to be an easy grab (which is what I was hoping for and to use for the short term for some home renovation work). Applied and while I did get approved, it was for only $5k. Really not at all what I was expecting and not sure why given my scores and income. I suppose the Hyundai and dealer HP may be scaring some but I continued onward...

NEXT...

X1 has been on my list for well over a year, and again despite them having done a roll of credit decreases for a ton of people, I still wanted it in my mix. Good news is, I'm approved. Great! Bad news is, my credit union is not on their approved list for Plaid and they can't verify my income on the other bank account that actually works. Crap! Worse news is: zero response to multiple e-mail requests over the past week. Like literally zero. That's not very confidence inspiring, imagine if I had an account and had issues. Maybe, hopefully, something will change... but I'm not holding my breath with this one.

NEXT...

Ultimately I decided to skip Alliant, I've seen mixed results with them more recently and remember getting a CITI Diamond pre-qualify in the mail so I opened that to check the terms. Another nice 0% APR intro offer, so I zapped and much my surprise, $8K SL! I guess I'm shocked that CITI offered me such a nice SL but I was just outright declined with Amex, that still boggles my mind.

Considering some of my other options, I checked to see what my Apple pre-qualify was for, and was given an approval for $5k but didn't take it. I decided to consider a handful of other options in hopes that I could pull a $10k+ card into the mix for my needs to no avail. Wells Fargo said I was pre-qualified but when I applied, they declined me. That one stung because they did a HP just to say no, despite the pre-qualify saying yes. Never again Wells Fargo, never again!

With that and sitting on it for a few more days, I said why not and went ahead and accepted the Apple card for $5k since I'll be in a corner for the next 24 months gardening.

I'm happy with the BOA card, looking forward to seeing out CITI Diamond plays out and adding an Apple card to the portfolio is nice but wasn't originally on the list. Still waiting on X1. All in all, an $18k increase in total available credit across 3 cards after adding a $36K auto loan isn't anything to shrug at I suppose.

Discover now remains to be my highest standing card at $10.5k with the newly opened CITI Diamond at $8k. Why did Amex have to do me this way over a few paid-on time and closed consumer finance accounts.... Beyond the X1, I'm not even sure what, if anything, can really be added to my radar of wants. In the end, I just really want a much larger SL card. Open to recommendations while I wait it out and plan my next round of roulette. In the meantime, I'll continue with the Discover love button smashing in hopes for it to eventually hit somewhere between the $18-$24k range.

Lastly, I forgot about having a PayPal credit account for the past 10 years. Haven't really used it recently and it was paid off, it was only at around $1,500. Decided to request an increase to $5k but they came back with granting an increase to $2,250. Something is something in the end I suppose but again, given the length of history and scores, I was expecting the $5k with them but instead get it with Apple and BOA instead.

1st congratulations on the approvals you did acquire.   2nd wow makes no sense on the ones that declined you.  Did you ever have an Amex before?  The X1 seems to be bugging out  not from the information I have been reading.

I don't have any advice because the banking world is weird lately.   However, I am curious why Amex is worse out about Affirm accounts... I would love if someone could elaborate on that.   Again I think you did well considering the economy etc.   Congrats !

did you apply directly apply? or did you just use the pre-qualify tool? did you use a referral link or a public offer?

it wouldn't surprise me if you used a referral if you would be approved if you used a public offer/different offer/different referral

definitely surprised at the denial. my Amex denial reasons prior were 'loans too high' 'lowest card has too low of a limit' neither of which changed when I ultimately ended up getting approved.

if you went for a credit card, perhaps getting the Green (for its elevated sign up bonus currently) or the Gold, with its decent credits if you can take advantage of them might be worth another shot in order to get into Amex

congrats on the other approvals though!

oh and Robinhood bought X1

Thanks!

@GZGI used the pre-qualify tool and it came back no go for the consumer finance accounts reason along with other accounts too short which isn't true since oldest account is 12 years and average age is about 5.

pick the card you want and apply directly, no HP if you're denied as long as it has this language, you might get a different result:

I agree with this. I don't remember the dates, but I was denied for the BCP one night, and the next I applied again and got approved. YEMC but give it a shot, no reason not too if it's the SP app.

I third this suggestion. Don't bother with the AMEX pre-qual. Just apply. It's a soft pull until you accept the card (like Apple).
