2nd Amex a SP?

Got my first Amex in May. I want to get another card with 0% balance transfer and 0% interest for a while to move a $4000 balance of one card I have. My other two are 0 balance but transfers and interest cost on them. Would another Amex be the route to take for this and would it be a SP since I already have one with them?

Current card is BCP $1000. 3x Cli was declined and haven't asked again. Will in November when my other cards are eligible for another increase. Balance $0 but used full every month.

Re: 2nd Amex a SP?

Typically additional AmEx cards have been soft pulls for existing accounts holders in recent times and their prequals when signed in are typically solid.  However a 1k credit limit and denied CLI can be interpreted as AmEx is holding cautious with your profile.

There are other cards/lenders that tend to offer more balance transfer friendly cards.  My perspective, from the limited information gleaned from your post,  is to knock out the remaining balances that you're carrying over before looking into additonal AmEx/rewards card.  Consider the credit limits on eisitng cards if you would be able to obtain a starting line that would cover all or a perecentage of your 4k before applying for a new card vs grinding out the balance on existing options.

Personally, I do not consider AmEx to be a balance transfer lender that I would entertain too much-others may feel differently.

Good luck on your decisions/applications.

Re: 2nd Amex a SP?

1984, Not sure what AMEX's policy is now but I had an ugly experience with them in April 2016. I applied for a Blue Cash Everyday and it was approved. A few days later I applied for a Platinum and it was approved. A week or two later I called AMEX to let them know that they should close my girlfriend's account because she had passed away about 6 months prior. The rep told me I could assume her account if I wanted to do so. He said I would be responsible for any balance. I knew there was no balance because due to her cancer treatments, I had been managing and paying the account for her. So I accepted the offer to assume her account too. I got a hard pull for each of the cards. I called AMEX and asked if they would consolidate the three pulls or remove two of them because they were so close in time, only about 2 weeks apart in total. The rep said they could. He said the credit reporting department did not take phone calls or emails and that I had to send a letter by fax explaining the situation. I sent it and never heard from anyone. After about a month I called back. This time I spoke to a supervisor. He explained that each card was a new extension of credit and AMEX would not remove or consolidate the inquiries. In my experience the AMEX reps are some of the most misinformed in the industry. The responses you will likely get on this board are likely more accurate than what the reps will tell you.

Re: 2nd Amex a SP?

Thank you. I think so because my other card I opened at the exact same time started me at $4000. I think Amex was being cautious and still is. I am getting a lot of offers, I just want to avoid an HP and thought I could with Amex vs Citi or NFCU.

Re: 2nd Amex a SP?

Once a cardholder, everything is SP from now on with Amex!!!

Ask for CLI on current card before applying for 2nd card! 3x current limit and also don't let that decision of cli impact rather you apply or not!

Re: 2nd Amex a SP?

AMEX will never discourage you from applying for another card (ECOA and all).  That said, I wouldn't discourage you from applying because it has been my experience as recent as last month that additional applications are a soft pull.  If declined, you will get a letter in the mail telling you exactly why.  Focus on addressing those issues.  No more guessing.

All this said, there is ALWAYS a chance that a creditor could decide to HP.  Anytime you make an application you should be prepared for that possibility.  Pretty sure it will be a SP.....
