31 day requirement to wait after American Express denial?

Hi everyone and thank you for taking the time to read my posts. Have a question ❓

I attempted to pre qualify for an American Express card on April 26th and was denied because of low FICO score. I then attempted again on May 6th after gaining a higher fico score and again was denied for the listed reason having a credit score too low. First attempt I believe my score was in the 640s and second time my Experian Fico scores were in the 650s. Now I'm at 670 and plan to reapply if/when my scores are closer to high 680s or in low 690s.

I was told just the other day by the American Express CSR not to use the pre qualification tool except once every 31 days after being denied approval. Is she right?

She did mention that if a application is approved you then have the option to apply for a second credit product on the same day. I learned this after my second attempt on May 6th.

I did attempt pre qualification for two different American Express cards on May 6th, and on that second card, there was a message afterwards saying that particular attempt was cancelled because I had tried for a card on the same day.

So obviously if one attempt is denied approval you definitely can't try again on the same day. Here's my question.

Have you been denied approval, and then reapplied and gotten approved within one week or two weeks? Or did you wait for the whole 31 days?

Thank you for your help.

did you do the full application or just the pre-qualification tool? If you did the full application, there's a cooldown period. I'm not sure about just using the pre-qualification tool

just apply for the card you want and make sure it has this language so you don't incur a HP if denied

This would depend on whether or not you did an actual application (would show up as a HP on your credit report) or did the pre-approval with Amex.

Also important to note, most big credit bureaus update your score with a report once a month. So if you use something like Credit Karma (which uses Vantage 3.0 + updates daily) your score may be inaccurate in the lenders eyes. Go for the FICO 8 scoring. Otherwise, I would recommend waiting to keep applying until you broach the high 690's or low 700's. I was approved for my Amex BCE ($6000 CL) with a 709 EX FICO score.

Good luck!!

Re: 31 day requirement to wait after American Express denial?

It's quite possible to get an Amex card with scores as low as 640, just depends on which cards you're after. Much better chances on a charge card or co-branded. One of my delta and my gold were approved in the 630-640s range.

As for how soon you can reapply, it could be everyday if you want. I jumped the gun on my delta gold. When my report updated 8 days later I applied again with a 638 and was approved.

As for more than one card at a time, what you were told was a bit inaccurate. If you want 2 revolvers, you can be approved for 2 in one month, but I believe they have to be at least 10 days apart. There's no limit on charge cards. So you could open a revolver, green, gold, and platinum on the same day. Or at least, you used to be able to do that in better economic times. Who knows now.

Hi and thank you for your response.

Every attempt was a pre qualification. None were the actual application. Just checking to see what I could qualify for. But apparently there are rules for attempting only the pre qualification after being denied.

No hard inquiry was involved when you attempt the pre qualification tool. Which is what I attempted.

Hi Brian

You were approved on the first attempt attempt, right?

I was denied which might have a different set of rules for attempting again.

I'm amazed and so pleased you were able to get approved for an American Express card with fico scores below 650. Did they pull Experian at that time?

Good on you.

I wonder if such a thing is even possible now? If I remember correctly you got approved in 2018?

I will be totally open and say if I can get approved by American Express while having my two unpaid charged off baddies in tow, then I might consider just paying off the $1900 Chase Bank credit card and maybe allow the $20k Honda finance account to sunset off my credit file.

Not sure if that's the moral thing to do but financially it could be the better outcome.

You keep mentioning your two unpaid chargeoffs...why not just pay/settle them? Having them show as paid when you app for Amex (and any lender, really) will look a thousand times better than having them show as unpaid.

Would it work against me if I try to settle both accounts and they report as being settled and not paid in full?

In my experience, applying for 2 cards within a week caused some confusion on their end.

If I were you I would chill out, and let the dust settle.  I would wait a few weeks and apply for one card

and one card only.
