Avenger48c,
I have regularly checked the pre-qual just for fun and no joy yet.
Ill keep on paying down to lower my util.
I appreicate the info!
Unless you actually need the card, right now is not a good time to apply. Your profile could use some improvement and Amex has recently tightened up especially with new users who have not had any Amex cards.
Wait a few months after your profile looks better and the Covid situation evolves and reassess.
Your absolutely right. I dont NEED the card at this moment. Its just a personal goal to get my foot in the door with AMEX and im in no rush.
That being said ill wait until my utilization is less than 10% and watch the economy.
If it helps I was just approved for the cash magnet on 6/01 with a modest $1000 limit. My Experian was 691, BK discharged 2014 Amex IIB for just over $10k

That definitely gives me hope!!!
@Anonymous wrote:Hey Polluckusn, here are a few random thoughts that come to mind and may be helpful here:
- Have you tried the Amex prequalification tool? That's usually a solid indicator, and might give you an idea of what Amex thinks of your profile. I believe Amex uses similar underwriting criteria for all of their charge cards, so if you see a prequalification for the Green or Gold, they will also likely approve the Platinum. https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/check-for-offers/
- Amex is apparently tightening down on their approval criteria for new members due to the current COVID-driven downturn, so a lot of existing data points on marginal approvals from a few weeks or months ago may no longer be reliable. With that said, the rule of thumb I've generally seen is EX of 680+ having a high likelihood of approval with less than that being at a lower likelihood depending on profile specifics.
- As you said, the charge cards and cobranded credit cards (Delta/Marriott/Hilton/etc) have historically tended to have lower underwriting requirements than their core credit cards (Blue Cash/Everyday etc). Lower end products within the cobranded lines usually have better odds of marginal approval than higher end ones, as well, because by law the annual fee can't be more than a certain percentage of the limit so they have to issue a higher limit for the higher end products.
- If you do get a prequalification for the Green or Gold but not the Platinum and would rather stick with the sure thing, Amex will generally
bombard you withprovide upgrade opportunities after the first year, so that may also be a good path.- Amex product change rules only allow you to switch within specific "families", generally based on whether it's a charge or credit card and what currency is earned. As a result, you can only change a charge card into a charge card, so something like a Blue Delta SkyMiles will never be able to convert to a Platinum charge card, for example.
One other thing - $6k/$17k is more than the 29% utilization threshold, so if you don't get any prequal offers from Amex you may want to pay down the balance on the Navy card and let it post, if you can. That would give you a little bump that might push you over the top.
This is my guess, new prequalifications may or may not come after your statement posts. I would think it varies upon lender but some might soft pull you on-demand when you ask for a prequal and others might do it on a arbitrary monthly soft pull.

A weird observation I have for them from last summer/fall when I used to check their prequal all the time was that when checking from their website, they would only run a new SP every 30-60 days. When I used to get ads on Facebook to check preapprovals, the FB version would run a real time SP every single time.

They might approve you after your utilization goes down, but they've also tightened UW criteria, so I'd expect a denial.
You have derogs, you are going to be a stepchild if approved. Once the initial excitement is over, the agony of "why my card wont grow when everyone else is" will start.
You will be told "they are getting to know you" which will last till your file is clean.
Derogs from only 3 years ago will land you in $1000.00 approval and tight Amex leash.
I'd wait longer.
I definetly agree with the others and wait to reduce your utilization and that Amex has tightened their UW...and to wait until the economy recovers. They may be more lenient at that point.
However, while I hear what @Remedios is saying, and yes, what she described is the vast majority of experiences from people with derogs, I figured I should weigh in some DP's for @Anonymous.
I also have derogs from early 2017...last July I applied for the Gold card, was approved. Next month I applied for the Aspire, was approved--with the minimum limit (for the Aspire card) of $3100. However, I got a 61 day 3x CLI, and then after another 180 days after that I was approved for an additional CLI (to $12,500, didn't want too much exposure for my income level).
I'm not saying that you couldn't be stuck with a $1k limit for awhile with no growth, and it's most definitely YMMV...but I'm also saying that they might not "get to know you" forever.
What was your scores last july when you applied? were they relatively close to mine?
@Anonymous your credit history and score may be completely different from mine but here is one example of how much AMEX has tightened down on approvals recently. See my link below to my recent GOLD card denial due to new accounts. And this was with preapprovals on the PreQual Link. (Other My Fico members posted that they had been approved by AMEX with more new accounts than I had.)
As @Remedios suggested, just because you CAN get approved doesn't mean you won't find yourself stuck with a lower-limit or higher APR card for a long time.
Waiting might be a good idea.
