AMEX Blacklist computer system down Sunday and Monday Morning

I've been on the AMEX blacklist since I burned them 9 years ago.  Still, I periodically test the waters with a new application.  So, Sunday I applied for a Gold Premier card, and once I submitted the app spun and spun.  Finally, it popped up with a few more questions about my assets and employment.  Now, I was very excited because this was the furthest that I have ever made it in the application process.  After submitting the second page, the app spun and spun and then stated that my application was under review and that I would receive an answer within 14 days by mail.

Truly, I thought that I finally cleared the blacklist.  Instead, however, about a half hour later, I received an email that a decision had been reached.  When I logged in:   DECLINED due to AMEX having previously canceled my accounts.   The same rejection I usually get.

Because I have never gotten this far before, (earlier tries are almost an instant decline), I thought I would call AMEX this morning.  After winding through IVR hell and being transferred by two reps, I received an automated message that stated that the computer system required to handle my particular need was down.  My take on this is that still, for several hours Monday morning, the automated blacklist server was not working.

I called in later in the day and was able to reach someone and I was sent to the collections number.  They looked up my records based on my SSN and sure enough, both old accounts were still there blacklisting me.  I asked what could be done to get back with AMEX and the rep told me I could pay back the outstanding amount, but there was no guarantee I would qualify for a card after that.  Well, unless I hit the lottery,  I doubt that I will pay them back since I burned them for just into five figures.   The rep further stated that otherwise, I will NEVER get back with AMEX and would be blacklisted forever since AMEX was included in my CH7.

Guess I'll try back in 20 years.

Heh. That is kinda ballsy to burn a lender for five figures, refuse to pay them and then go back and ask for a new credit card. Smiley Happy

Many people have done it in the past and will continue to do it in the future..  Some people get off Amex/Chase etc blacklist after time even if they don't pay, others will remain on it for along time to come.  OP if someone took 5 figures from you and never paid you back would you even lend them money again?

Re: AMEX Blacklist computer system down Sunday and Monday Morning

I've made mistakes in the past and burned AMEX for less than $1k in my BK. Hope they give me a chance one day. To the OP, there are many other lenders out there that are BK friendly. Check out the BK section and take a look at this thread http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Bankruptcy/Bankruptcy-Friendly-Credit-Cards-Pt-2/td-p/3999737

Discover $21k | Venture $20k | Quicksilver $15k | NICU Rewards MC $13.5k | Costco $14.5k | Citi Costco $12.5k | Chase Sapphire Reserve $10k | Barclay Apple $9.6k | Best Buy MC $10k | Merrick Bank Visa (formerly Hooters) $2.6k |

If you burned them for less than 1k it might be worthwile to pay them back what you owed them if you have the funds. I'm not sure that really makes a difference or that is just what amex reps say to get your money and then deny you anyway though.

IT happens alot and bank will approve folks that have burned them in the past as they see it as a good business decision to do so.

Also, Amex is one of the few that doesnt sell their debts so alot of times you cant pay an old creditor becasue they had already sold their debt to a JDB.

American Express: Platinum Charge, Optima, Business Gold, Delta Business Reserve, Business Cash, Business Plus
Barclays: Arrival+ WEMC (Closed)
Capital One: Savor WEMC, Venture X Visa Infinite
Chase: Freedom U Visa Signature, CSR Visa Infinite
Citibank: AAdvantage Platinum WEMC
Elan/US Bank: Fidelity Visa Signature
Credit Union: Cash Back Visa Signature

Re: AMEX Blacklist computer system down Sunday and Monday Morning

A five-figure debt would be a lot to repay even if you were certain to get the card and without that guarantee.....

It is hard to read Amex sometimes though.  Recently a rep confirmed that if they close your OBC for MS, Amex doesn't regard it is a negative closure, and you are free to get other cards once you have a 0 balance on the closed card.   Other issuers are much less forgiving!

Re: AMEX Blacklist computer system down Sunday and Monday Morning

Y'all are making me want to find my BK paperwork from around 1990-91-ish. I have no idea who I burned back then or for how much. But I'm pretty sure AmEx would have been on there.
