Re: AMEX PLATINUM Pre-approval w/100K pts vs Chase CSR

I think the other item thats been overlooked is the option to PC the Plat to a PRG.  You'll get $100/yr airline credit so that makes the card $95/yr long term.

PRG gives 3X on airfare---same as CSR---but you get 2X at gas stations and supermarkets.  So depending on your use case, there might be a place in your wallet for both.

@digitekwrote:

CSR vs Amex Plat is more a personal choice =D

I signed up for my first card for just the sign-up bonus last week.  That Delta Gold card was just too easy, 50k miles and $150 off my ticket right there.  I plan on cancelling it at month 13 and getting a Delta Platinum.

100k Plat is easy decision here if you are OK with cancelling it after one year.  You could get both and still be fine.  That 100k bonus is large and worth about $1000 almost any way you slice it.  All the crazy redemptions you hear about for people getting .06 cents per MR point are usally for first class tickets, that is where you get the best point/dollar redemption value, but you can always find some deals on main cabin fare if you look hard enough.  Even if you don't look very hard, you should be able to get .01 cent per MR really easily.  Amex is for all intents and purposes giving you a $1000 credit if you pay them $550 for the card.  I like the idea of using Uber Eats to take care of that $200 credit, that would be pretty fun I think =D

Can't go wrong mate, I love my CSR and it works for me and my travel perfectly, but I'll eventually get the Amex Plat with 100k SUB, it is just too good to pass up.

Just to be a nit-picker, .01 cent or .06 cents for an MR would be really really bad.  1c would be normal, 6c would be very good (and as you say, usually international first class).....

PSA: units and/or decimal placement matters!

100k points is worth a minimum of 1000 dollars. Plus you get 400 in airline gift cards the first year. So minimum of 850 dollars of value after paying annual fee. So I would take the offer. Canceling the card after one year will have zero effect on your credit as will stay on your report for ten years after cancel and it has no credit limit.

Can't seem to quote on my phone but in answer to real world uses of 100k Amex points. I used mine to get 1000 dollar Home Depot gift card. Bought a new washer and dryer. Home Depot had 30 percent off plus free delivery and installation. And state had tax free day on new washer and dryer. Worked out out pretty well. I think Citi Thank you points are more valuable. Especially for travel. Unless you fly Delta don't see reason to keep card past first year.

With Amex Platinum you select your preferred airline and then purchase 200 dollar gift card and they will credit your account. Then in January do it again. It is once per calender year you get credit but in first year of having card you get it twice.

Re: AMEX PLATINUM Pre-approval w/100K pts vs Chase CSR

AMEX seems to feel VERY strongly that the gift cards are no longer an option for that airline gift credit. Thoughts? If they are saying ‘absolutely no way’ then I feel like it’s a pretty big risk to assume that will actually work?
