AMEX gurus please help...

Amex question

I was a member for AMEX since 94' always paid perfectly. Never ever late. However, in 2010 I defaulted, account was sent to collections and I ended up paying in FULL the amount that I owed. (Circa 2012-2013)

Since then, I haven't had an AMEX because I  felt I didn't have the "credit score" needed to re-apply, it's been many years since I've had an AMEX card.

I wonder If AMEX would consider me again? ( I know all I need to do is APPLY and see but I don't see it that way as I'm SUPER cautious with my credit now )

I've read that AMEX usually pulls EX but I also read here that could depend on the state you live in? (never heard of that before-though I'm in FL)

Any input would be gladly appreciated,

Thanks,

Re: AMEX gurus please help...

They have a good pre-qualifier tool.  If it shows you are prequalify, it's pretty solid.  I didn't get pre-qualified but I was still approved when I apped for the Gold (and ended up double dipping for the Amazon Prime Business)

AMEX Gold | Purdue FCU $20,000 | FNBO Evergreen $15,000 | TFCU Plat Visa $15,000 | PenFed Platinum Rewards $15,000 | PenFed Pathfinder $15,000 | Citizen's Bank Cash Back+ $15,000 | Synchrony Premier MC $10,000 | SG Visa $10,000 | NFCU MoreRewards $7,000 | NFCU cashRewards $17,000 | Discover IT $6,000 | Capital One BuyPower $950 | AMEX BCP $5,000 | AMEX Amazon Prime Business $3,000

B&H Payboo Card $15,000 | Amazon Prime Card $10,000 | PC Richard Card $15,000 | Target RedCard $2,000 | Walmart Store Card $1,400 | Shell Gas Card $1,200 | Overstock Store Card $7,000 | Kohl's Store Card $3,000

Re: AMEX gurus please help...

@rostrow416 thank you for your response!

So you didn't get pre-qual but was still approved, that's interesting!

I see in your SIG that you did some "spring cleaning" may I ask why? too high interest rate?

@Anonymous just getting rid of lower limit/no growth cards.  I used my recent approvals to replace them and I'm hoping that by only keeping the higher limit cards that I'm setting a new "floor" for future approvals.

You have a checkered past with AMEX going back 8 or so years ago so the prequal site won't be reliable.

You did pay them the entire amount, and there are many DP that AMEX does not hold a grudge forever when they have been burned but later were made whole.

If you're willing to risk a HP go ahead and apply for a/the card that you want.  If you are denied without a HP then you know you are at least for now on the blacklist.   If you are denied with a HP you will know that you are not on their blacklist and so should be able to get back in with them in the not too distant future.

Re: AMEX gurus please help...

I've had Amex cards since 1999. My experience with them is they'll gladly take a high annual card fee from anyone over a 680. I usually average over 740, but I have many friends that I've sent referrals to that have lower scores and every one of them has been approved.(and I've gotten my bonus points)

Re: AMEX gurus please help...

@Anonymous I burned AMEX in 2012, but like you I paid them back in full. I got back in with them in 2019, with a borderline approval for $1,000 on a Delta Gold card. Now I have 3 revolvers with $44,000 TCL through them. If they let you back in, always PIF and keep your reports clean. Do you have any COs on your reports? I see a huge variation in your scores. If that is the case, they may approve you but it will likely be with a toy limit that will not grow until you're able to get your reports clear of any COs.

Re: AMEX gurus please help...

Greetings JERV ~ Welcome to the forum . . . You really won't know where you stand with AmEx until you actually apply and be approved or denied (with a letter of explanation). If you apply it will be a hard pull. AmEx pulled my Experian report and approved me for a $5k limit -but- on the 61st day of being a cardholder, I submit a request for 3X my limit and it was approved!!! Your Experian (EX) and TransUnion (TU) scores are far less than your Equifax . . . Why? Are there any other negative trade lines (i.e. collections, charge-offs, etc.) on your EX and TU reports? If so, this forum can assist and provide guidance on how to address them before reapplying. Wishing you success on your AmEx approval.

Starting FICO 8 Score in 06/2019: EQ-625, TU-649, EX-640
Current FICO 8 Score in 06/2021: EQ-796, TU-806, EX-812
Goal FICO 8 Score in 06/2022: EQ-825, TU-850, EX-850

Re: AMEX gurus please help...

@Ficoproblems247 Yes, my EQ is reporting well. However, TU & EX have a couple CO's which are currently being worked on. As by removing those two my EQ shoot up over 150 pts I'm gonna wait until those couple CO's are removed before I apply with AMEX again.

I have a Capital One QS which I PIF every month but I just recently noticed there isn't more grow for that one.
