Could you do it on other cards?
Wasn't there an issue with self referrals with Amex in the past? They didn't even check to ensure that it could not be done.
How is this anything like self referral if no incentive is present?
It would be an IT issue where they are not diligently checking for duplication of cardholder accounts that get people in trouble. If they aren't diligent in one area, chances are they are not in another.
This title baffles me ok im going to exit left

I found this amusing. Amex not checking for duplications but they'll remember my charge off from 20 years ago. 😂

Yeah, I found it amusing they allowed self referrals. Trying to add yourself as an AU through the website just might work lol. And then it could be trouble. I would be afraid it might go through.

That's how I read that as well. If that is the case and she does not have a SSN or ITIN, you should be able to call American Express and have her added via passport number.
Thanks for the input. Will get that done!

No, @Anonymous
Self referal has nothing to do with what you described.
Self referal is about collecting a bonus you're not entitled to and it's clearly spelled out in T&C
If an incentive for adding AU was present, it could be concerning, but there isn't one.
OP can either do what K suggested, or ask for replacement card due to "damage"
Both cards would be functional.
Simple as that.

OP is actually talking about something else. The subject was a little confusing.
I'm looking at it from a website and IT perspective in that it does not validate that the cardholder cannot create duplication within the system. I know we aren't talking about incentives here.
This is the difference between calling a CSR and asking if you can self refer or asking if you can add yourself as an AU. You would get a no from a CSR on both. Doing that via website may produce a different outcome.
But adding self as an AU isn't what OP was trying to do, so were good.
