There had to be a reason for American Express to lower your limits. I'm not accusing you of doing anything nefarious or criminal, but a late payment could have spooked them., as could something derogatory on your credit report. From what I heard, the pandemic with the resulting economic fallout caused many creditors to limit their exposure by lowering limits.
For what it's worth, I don't think it's appropriate to tell everyone to stay away from American Express. Just because you've had a bad experience with them doesn't mean that everyone will.

We might as well go around the horn. My contempt is toward Wells Fargo. That's the only company that rejected me, after sending dozens of applications by mail. I finally gave in and applied. They put me on a pending list and asked for a financial statement. I provided 3 months worth, with plenty of digits. They did nothing for weeks. I called. The supervisor rejected me, with a scattergun list of reasons that made no sense. I received a rejection letter 3 days later that was mailed prior to that phone call, and included a set of entirely different reasons. Nothing on one list matched the other list, and they didn't even have a vague relationship to each other.
Wells Fargo has no idea what it is doing. Making it up as they go along. They also do not have a shred of integrity or decency. I asked them to return the financial statements. They agreed multiple times but never did it. I asked to be removed from their mailing list. They insisted my name was zapped and I would never receive anything again. That was a flagrant ongoing lie. I continue to receive applications from them, including this week...for the identical card they rejected.
I would strongly ecourage you to report them to the Better Business Bureau.
