Amex 3X CLI ... Not Quite the usual. Help?

Hello Guys,

I just got the a new card,  the Hilton Ascend Card. I've recently requested a CLI on my spg card to 18k (SL 6k) so the new card only has a 1000 limit, understandable.

I would transfer 3k from 18k to the Ascend card so it will have a limit of 4k.

However, after the 61day mark, when I request the 3X CLI on the ascend card, should I go for 6k? +2k since if I didnt move the limit I would be requesting 3k.

Kind of tricky.

Thanks you guys!.

From what I understand, you can only have 1 CLI per 6 months on 1 card regardless of how many cards you have with them.

Thanks.

How about after 6 months? Let's say 6 months since my CLI in the spg, what new limit can I request on the hilton Card? Maybe 10k?

Correct, Amex requires 181 days after an approved CLI on any of your cards, or 91 days after a denial on any card. You can always request 3X whatever your current limit is, regardless of any credit line reallocations.

is there something like when you reach 25k total limit, it triggers a financial review from Amex?

Re: Amex 3X CLI ... Not Quite the usual. Help?

A financial review and a request for a 4506-T are very different. You will not get a financial review from making a credit line increase request. Some people are able to go very high on their CLI requests without being asked for a 4506-T (my first one was when I asked for $63,000 on my Starwood card, I lowered it to $35k and got it, and they’ve given me an additional $20k in credit in the past month and I am days away from asking for another CLI). Others may be asked around the $32k mark, or lower in some cases. You can always back out and ask for a lower amount, then ignore the form they mail you. Or submit the form and wait wait wait. Just be sure to check the box at the bottom that says it’s optional; it’s not!

So they will tell me if what I'm requesting will trigger a financial review? And then i can lower my request to avoid it?

Re: Amex 3X CLI ... Not Quite the usual. Help?

@Anonymous, income verification (IV) and financial review (FR) are two different things. A CLI request may or may not trigger a request for IV. It will not trigger FR.

IV doesn't affect your account, and it can be avoided. It's nosy, but it isn't harmful. FR is triggered by bizarre purchase behaviors, and it shuts down your account, either temporarily or permanently.

IV is often triggered when requesting a CLI that bumps one's total limits to 35k or more. And it's generally avoided when one's total limits are 34.5k or less. We've seen a handful of exceptions recently where people have jumped past 35k without IV requests. What's more likely to happen is that someone lands in the 30–34.5k range without IV, then they're offered 5k every six months without IV.

If you're asked for IV, hit your browser's back button and try again with a lower amount. Some lower their requests in $500 increments. You'll be sent a paper 4506-T for every CLI request that triggers IV. Some here have gotten 20 of them rubber-banded together. These can be shredded or used as bathroom wallpaper.

Go ahead and transfer 4k to your new card. Then request a 3X CLI six months after your previous increase. Success would give you 29k in total limits, which would be unlikely to trigger an IV request.

No.  KIB explained it well.  If you request a CLI, you may get a 4506-T request where they want your filed tax returns for previous years.  If you see this request then just back out and request a lower amount until you do not get the the 4506-T request.  This is voluntary.  If you don't submit this form then you don't get your requested CLI.  You may get a CLI without this form(backing out and trying a lower amount).

A FR is not optional and they will shut down your accounts until the outcome of your review is determined.  This is involuntary.  Give them the info they require or else.
