Amex BCE: "Request an upgrade"

Having just re-downgraded my BCP to BCE, I got an email from Amex explaining the virtures of the BCP, and asking me to "Request an Upgrade" BEFORE 12/19/2019

No SUB incentives or AF waiver etc, so not sure what would change Dec 20 if I wanted to upgrade then!

How long ago was your last downgrade to BCE?

Typically, a couple of mine usually get a SUB for the upgrade (or re-upgrade if you will) after a year or so. Having the SUB as the incentive is a plus, no SUB is...well...not as fun.

It was last month!

Right, and with an AF (and no SUB) there is no value prop for me in the BCP   (With 5% from Chase at WholeFoods, and 4.5% on the AR everywhere else, the extra rewards on getting 6% on $6K doesn't make up for the AF)

Re: Amex BCE: "Request an upgrade"

Were you logged in at the time? When logged out (but cookies still present) Amex will often present an offer to upgrade (no SUB) that you're not even eligible for if you just got the card, but it disappears when logged in.

Either way, their algorithms aren't looking at your history, just at your current line up. I started gettiing offers on the Gold card the day after I cancelled mine.

Maybe to give them flexibility to change AFs on short notice?

In an extreme case, if Platinum has a $1000 AF in 2029, they might not want people submitting "upgrade coupons" with a $550 AF from 2019.

Personal spend: Amex Gold, Amex Schwab Plat., BofA PR+CCR(x2), Costco
Business use: Amex Bus. Plat., BBP, Lowes Amex AU, CFU AU
Perks: Delta Plat., United Explorer, IHG49, Hyatt, "Old SPG"
Mostly SD: Freedom Flex, Freedom, Arrival
Upgrade/Downgrade games: ED, BCE
SUB chasing: AA Platinum Select

This was an email, so neither logged in or out!

Very interesting.  I don't think I've ever ran across anything like that.  But, you're right, without the SUB there's no point, especially if you are maximizing rewards elsewhere.  But, great DP nonetheless.

Re: Amex BCE: "Request an upgrade"

I recieved the same email with no sub listed. Even checked the pre approval with no mention of sub for upgrading. For reference I've never had the preferred cash and I currently have the cash magnet.
