Re: Amex Gold instead of Platinum for Daily Driver in an MR Setup

I don’t have Plat, but I do use my Gold as my daily driver. Yes, its main earnings benefit is groceries and restaurant spend, but that’s the bulk of my weekly spend anyway. I’m not trying to focus totally on maxing every card’s rewards at the moment simply because I don’t spend huge amounts so the opportunity cost is small. I’ll use QS/It Cash for random spend and It Chrome on gas at times, but otherwise I put pretty much everything on Gold for simplicity’s sake at bill time, and to earn the MRs for possible travel late this year. I carry my BCP but its main use is subscription services, although I’ll throw some spend on it here and there to nudge the cash back toward the redemption threshold.

I will likely revise this way of doing things later this year but for now it’s just as easy to drive almost everything through Gold, bank the MRs, and have them waiting for next holiday season.

If I could justify Plat’s AF, it would mean I was traveling a lot more, but I’d still not likely use it for daily spend, since as stated, most of my daily costs are categories that Gold rewards far more than Plat.

The reason people refer to it with words like "workhorse" is that most people buy groceries and/or dine out on a nearly daily basis. Those are probably the most common reasons people use credit cards.

Fair point, I may have been incorrectly conflating "daily driver" and "workhorse" with non-category spend just because I figured people had more than food and groceries to buy day-to-day. And interesting theories about using Gold just because one happens to carry it and swipe it more frequently than the Platinum. My Platinum and Gold are in analogous places in different columns of the wallet so they're just equally easy to access so it must not have crossed my mind.

Now just need to make room for the BBP to get an actual good MR deal on non-category spend Smiley Happy

You got that Amex Delta Blue with $1k spot that is a prime candidate for the BBP slot. Smiley Very Happy

Shy of traveling I would think that most folks don't carry their Platinum card.  The exceptions being an Amex offer or if they plan to make a really big ticket purchase and want the protection that comes from using said card.

For my situation if I chad to choose between Platinum and the Gold for a daily driver I'd go with neither and stick with the EveryDay Preferred or BBP.  I work in a hospital so the the cafe doesn't code as dining as the BBP or EDP would work just fine.  On the rare chance that I actually leave the facility for lunch it's usually across the street Hyvee and the EDP does just fine there.

True but I'm just waiting until I have to make a really large spend so that I would benefit from using the 0% intro APR period. Was also contemplating getting rid of the Amex Amazon Biz Prime and get the Chase Amazon Prime so I can still get 5% and open up a revolver Amex slot.
