I think my brother was confused when he got his Platinum Card last year and his member since is like 2022 but when he added me as an AU my card came with 2015 on it which is when I opened my first Amex (the no af everyday card). The platinum is his first Amex card ever idk why he never got an Amex before 2022.

references to backdating combined with American Express is kinda taboo.
I don't think that the case, it has been a frequent topic of discussion especially in the year or two when it stopped "working". Nothing underhand on the part of the consumer, I always found it odd on behalf of Amex! ("Yes, I know the account was opened yesterday, but it makes sense to report as April 1978, because the current month is April and they opened their first Amex in 1978. I don't see why you are confused!")
I remember throngs of people on the verge of tantrums.
You know what I'm about to have a tantrum over? Why doesn't my username have a member since date under it for the forums?
Here you go!!
LMAO!

Your actual card will reflect the year you first established your relationship with them.
I became a member in 1990, lost my membership 2010, regained it back on 2023 , still says "Member Since 90".

When you apped and set up the app did it say member since 23 or 90?

We want to impress pretty young cashiers by having cards that reveal that we may be older than we look?
I always go up to not-so-attractive cashiers, especially at stores where I am not buying anything, whip out my Amex, point to the member since date (87 in my case) and say "See? See?" and then laugh mysteriously. (OK, mysteriously for me, probably more a nervous high-pitched giggle to others) They get confused/angry/threaten to call security but all in a day's work. I assumed most people do this.
Cool! I'm going to use that strategy to get an upgrade to business class. I've been an AMEX member since 1984 and demand respect! If Warren B. can get special treatment as a long term AMEX green card member, so should I. Thank's for the idea, lol.
"Member since" should mean just that. If you lapsed your "membership" then you haven't been a member since your first card. As membership (and service) is an important concept to AmEx I don't understand why you would be considered a member if you volunterily quit the program and then came back. To my knowledge there's no particular importance attached to the "member since" value on the card other than vanity.

Yes, well it could say "First member" or something but the wording doesn't mean that much. As mentioned before, it was the backdating of the credit record that was really crazy.
Not sure I would call it "vanity" but can't suggest a different term!
I got approved for the BCE and Green Card last week. My BCE says "Member since '23" but my Green Card says "Member since '13". I noticed the Green card took a few extra days to arrive. It also says "Member since '13" when I log into the app.
I think it's because I had one of those Bluebird Amex prepaid cards (don't know if they still exist) back in 2013 when I was 22 and broke af. It's cool that they remembered that bc I surely forgot. I've come a long way financially lol. Now everytime I use my Amex I'll be reminded of how far I've come.
My guess is that it takes a while for the system to recognize the original year you became a customer if you've been gone a while. I bet if you order a replacement it'll say "Member since '15".
I dated a gal who was an AU on her dads Gold Card, which had all her personal Amex cards showing "Member Since 81".
She was born in '78...
