Re: Amex Pre-Approvals

As others have said, non of my Amex pre-approvals were denied and they were all SP's, after the first one.

Consider your personal travel habits before choosing a card though. The platinum has great perks, but unless you use amextravel a lot, it doesn't have the greatest earning potential. The Hilton Aspire is also generally recognized as a solid card, IF you stay at Hiltons, and, of course, if you fly Delta, each of their cards can be useful and worth it depending on how much you fly.

However, do consider that the AF is basically money down the drain if you aren't able to recoup the AF from travel credits or other perks.

I just went through to see which ones give me the "You are pre-approved!" message.  Any thoughts?

Platinum
Delta Sky Miles, Gold, Reserve, & Platinum
Green
HH Ascend
HH Aspire
SPG
SPG Luxury
Gold

Not pre-approved for:
EveryDay
EveryDay Preferred
Magnet
Blue Cash

im an outlier here in that prequals dont mean much. Just because you arent prequal orpreapproved doesnt mean you wont get a card. Not all of us even get these but still get approvals. Choose the card that best suits your needs not which one you are preapproved. Imo

Re: Amex Pre-Approvals

Travel domestic and int'l often and use Southwest 75% of the time.  We generally rent houses/villas where ever we travel and don't stay at hotels.

Re: Amex Pre-Approvals

Question: Does Amex go by Fico8 or Fico Bank Card 8? Just curious since my BankCard8 is 686, that even matters.

With that added extra bit of info, I would suggest, first look at the airlines and rental facilities that MR points can be used with.

If the airline that is available to you is not on Amex's list then solely getting that card purely for air travel would not have as much benefit to you as it does for someone like myself, that primarily flies Delta or Virgin Atlantic and stays mostly at the Hilton chains when I do book overnight travel.

Maybe take a look at Chase and it's UR's. They are better suited toward Southwest, if that is your airline of choice.

RESmiley Embarassed>>>"Does Amex go by Fico8 or Fico Bank Card 8?"

I might stand coreected, But I am pretty sure Fico8

when I check My FICOSCORE Summary on My Amex Phone APP, it states

"Your FICOScore 8 Based on Experian Data is the same score used by American Express"

Thanks, that is what I get also.  Mine updates on 2/14 so maybe I will wait until then.

Re: Amex Pre-Approvals

They don’t use the bank card fico8.

Regardless, with your travel habits, hotel cards are out of the question, and delta cards may not be worth it if you don’t really fly them. The only remaining possibility is the Platinum card to take advantage of the lounge access, but you’d have to take advantage of the Uber credits, either through taking rides or ordering ubereats.

Also consider the Chase SW cards since they have the companion pass offer right now.

Re: Amex Pre-Approvals

I recently asked Amex about "pre-approvals"  they told me that they don't do pre approvals.  I have a few 'new welcome offers"  not sure if that is the same or not.

Hmm. They generally do pre-approvals, and they're usually relatively reliable as well...
