Amex advice

I'm a rebuild error who still has a long way to go, all scores 648 to 655 ex to eq.

I went on the Amex pre-qual site today and all I qualify for is the green or gold card. I really want the bce. I still have negatives on my reports BTW. How accurate is the pre-qual for Amex? Should I take what I can get to get my foot in the door or should I just wait until my scores are better?
Any advice is welcomed. Dv

Re: Amex advice

Hi DV....can you refresh my memory...any BK?

My scores are higher but I have a BK on file. When I pre-qual, I had the PRG, BCE, ED and Plat. I wanted the SPG. To play it safe, I got the ED. Then I thought, I should get what I want, so apped and got the SPG, a few days later.

Im not sure of the difference in UW in the charge and cc, or I would say just apply for what you really want.

Even if the BCE showed as being prequalified, there would be no guarantee of an approval.  At some point if you want the card then you'll have to take a chance and apply.  A HP really isnt that big of a deal and the effects of it on your score are minimal.  You're likely to lose more points by opening a new account if you were approved than anything from the HP.  Good luck if do you apply.

Re: Amex advice

The underwriting for the revolvers are a lot higher then the charge cards. You scores are boarder line i would say. Why not get the PRG and build a relationship with Amex then apply for the revolver. The PRG is free for the first year.

Open up the Green or the Gold first because of it's lower underwriting criteria.

Once you're an AMEX customer (you would be after approval) they'll soft pull you for the BCE app.

Re: Amex advice

I think, this is not the case and applying for any AMEX card requires a HP, even if for a current customer of AMEX.

This was at least the case for me. I had BCE and for Gold and other AMEX cards, HP was used. I got Gold but not approved for AMEX Macy's.

Re: Amex advice

It's only a HP if approved. And sometimes if you have been with them a while not even then. It's a SP if denied.

Re: Amex advice

Nope. My AMEX Macy's was denial and it was a HP.
