I was only showing the Green Card on pre-approvals and I got the BCE, the PRG, the Platinum and the SPG. They seem more than willing to give you cards. A lot of people pick up a charge card and a credit card on the same day as you won't get a second hard pull.
AMEX Gold application is via AMEX website directly. I am checking my EX report and I see a HP regarding AMEX Gold card application. Your comment is incorrect on HP.

So which was it? Last post you said AMEX Macy's now its AMEX Gold so make up your mind. It is will documented on here that current Amex card holders is a SP for denial and HP if approved. The Macy's is not applyed for on the Amex website so it is probaby going to be a HP regardless.
I said AMEX Gold was approved but AMEX Macy's was denial. Applied for each in different months and both had HP.
I did not have a denied application via AMEX website to see whether it would be SP or HP. Anyway, I also had a denied Disocver application via Discover website and it was SP. Therefore, SP for denied applications might be the case...

That makes more sense why they are both HP. The Macy's because it's just on the Amex network not an Amex card and the Gold because it was approved.
@xenon3030 wrote:I think, this is not the case and applying for any AMEX card requires a HP, even if for a current customer of AMEX.
This was at least the case for me. I had BCE and for Gold and other AMEX cards, HP was used. I got Gold but not approved for AMEX Macy's.
Then you're an exception. Could have something to do with your card not even being listed on AMEX's site.
It is well known around here and Flyertalk that an AMEX denial after you're an established customer is a soft pull. Lately I've been hearing about soft pull approvals too, and I can likely vouch for those people because when I applied for my Hilton Honors card a couple of months ago, it did not result in a HP.
Let the OP take the well known advice from the majority, not the very few exceptions.
Let me add that two applications in one day won't result in two hard pulls either. Will the BCE be manually reviewed if you're approved for the Green or PRG right before it? Most likely, but it's a soft pull based on information from the first application's hard pull.
I took a HP back in April when I got the BCE. Since then I got EDP, PRG, and green on the same day, and then a Hilton card a few weeks later and didn't get a HP for any of those.

I believe the Macy's AMEX is issued by Citi and not by AMEX directly. Which makes sense why you still got the hardpull for it, being that the issuer is a different bank
