Amex approval question.

I have a 719 FICO CS. Amex sent me a prescreened letter. I currently have one issue with my credit. I have 7 student loan accounts in default. I was approved for the fresh start program and they will be removed from my credit in June or July. Other than that I don't have any issues. My utilization is 0%. I have a secured credit card thru discover. I was approved for that in February. I also have a line of credit through my bank. That account is 2 years old. Never missed a payment. Capital One won't approve me due to a credit card that went into collections in 2016. I'm paying on it thru a collection agency.

Is amex a good card or should I try others?

What are the odds of getting approved?

Does a soft inquiry show up to other companies that pull CR?

Re: Amex approval question.

I'd hold off and grow your file some more with just 1 card. As you said you'll be sitting in a better position in 1-2 months. Many companies frown on negs on SL's. Once Cap1 is PIF. You can pre-qual again. AMEX isnt really for a newer file as a starter card. Dont know who youi bank with. You can talk to a Rep and ask. Mailers are really marketing.

What does PIF mean? How long does it take until I can apply again?

Good idea. I'll wait until the SL says off of my record then start looking. I'm not sure why Amex would market to me with my credit situation lol.

Re: Amex approval question.

PIF is paid in full. A paid charge off will no longer count against your util %'s. Even though you have 1 card. Then try Cap1 for a card once paid. AMEX is a couple yrs down the road. Have to climb the mountain to get to the top. You just dont land there. Pay off the CO ASAP to help your credit file. The rest will fall into place.

Sounds good! One more question, my CR doesn't show any collections. It's over 7 years but I'm paying on them. It doesn't show up on my CR and I'm unsure if creditors can see it even if it doesn't show up for me? Sorry for the questions. I'm new at this lol

Re: Amex approval question.

If its not on your report. Its gone. Though zombie collectors will still try to collect on that past debt. Its past its time. Gone. Once you started payment on the CO debt the SOL clock restarts and valid for the new time limit set by the state. And Creditor can sue. The Credit Report Item would drop off after 7 years from the DOFD. That DOFD does not change even if the payment made onto a CO debt. And CRA would still remove the information from the credit report as per the initial scheduled date of DOFD + 7 Years.

Just answering this bit:  No, a soft inquiry is invisible to other companies (and does not impact your score).   In fact, they are difficult for even you to see unless you get them directly from the bureaus.   If you pull them from say Credit Karma, or here, you won't see any soft inquiries, only hard ones.

Re: Amex approval question.

One question: where did you get that score from? FICO isn't a score type, it's the algorithm used to generate a score. There are three bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion), and the most common model used by CC companies is 08.

But yes, I'd wait to do anything until your SLs fall off. Also, Capital One is actually pretty forgiving. 7 years is plenty of time for them to forgive and forget. I don't know if you've tried getting back in with them since 2016, but you should at least try to run their prequal tool.

Re: Amex approval question.

I just looked and experian is at 739. TransUnion is 701 and Equifax is 688. TransUnion in Equifax scores came from Credit karma.
